Haha that sound about right toronado. I always make my friends plant different things. Luckily during that killer wind we had last year, many of those Bradford Pears were knocked down.

Lots of pears here, but also ornamental cherries. The red maple cultivars are popular as well.

I forgot an important one - in these days of ever smaller lots, Leyland Cypress is certainly a top seller as people try to deal with neighbors peering in their windows.

Too bad those Leyland Cypress will grow bigger than their entire tiny lot with time!

The list is similar here in Kansas too. I'd add Vanderwolf's Pine and Bracken's Brown Beauty Southern Magnolia. These 2 I think are good ones and hardly over represented in cultivation, but they've both been selling by the truck load over the past 10 years or so.

Tons of crapes ... every variety, dogwoods, cleveland pears and cherries.

For non-ornamental trees you see a lot of: red maple, tulip trees, white pine, red oak, willow oak, American holly, Southern magnolia, beech.

For flowering and other ornamentals: crape myrtle, cherries - Kwansan, Yoshino, etc., dogwoods, Japanese maples, purple-leafed plum.

There's actually quite a variety if you look for it.

The most overplanted deciduous landscape/street tree in my area is willow oak. But unlike the red maple and freemans maples that are rapidly catching up in terms of overplantedness, willow oak has zero ornamental appeal.

However the bigbox stores and garden centers don't commonly carry those anymore, they pretty much carry just silver maple, weeping willow and bradford pears and japanese maples and leyland cypress. And lots of fruit trees. Pecan, peaches, apples, pears. With the exception of k-mart who gets an A+ for variety.

I thought the point of the thread was commonly purchased trees - in the South there are lots of dogwoods because they are native to the area and can be seen (especially now) throughout the natural areas.

Yes, I'd agree that crepe myrtles are also very commonly planted - especially noticeable when they are chopped at the tops!

I'm in Omaha, in a relatively new suburb. By far, I see mostly the flowering pears (& I'm tired of them!), also a lot of crabapples (Prairiefire, I think, mostly), and birches too. For evergreens, mostly Co. Blue Spruces. My immediate neighbors seem to have a liking for Autumn Purple Ashes, I kind of want one myself-- they ARE gorgeous!

ESH you are right I neglected the word "yard" trees, sorry about that.
I would have to say the answer is still Willow oak, seeing as how it is overplanted by homebuilders. But if you want to know what is most overplanted by homeOWNERS, then I'd have to say the leyland cypress, bradford pear and crepe myrtle in that order. As bad as it is here with pears, it is much worse in other cities. Knoxville, TN for example is the biggest bradford pear monoculture I have ever seen.

Yes, Tennessee seems to have an ideal climate for woody invasives. The worst Tree of Heaven infestations I've seen are also in TN.

In Maryland, to my eye, the most common are...

1) Southern White Pine - I hate this tree. It's rare to see one thats over 30 years old that hasn't had a big chunk snapped off with white ooze pouring out.
2) Pin Oak - A decent tree but they drop a lot of branches.
3) Red Maple - If trimmed properly when young to prevent bad early branching, is an excellent tree.
4) Bradford Pear - A nice looking tree, but prone to fall apart in thunderstorms. Very weedy.
5) Japanese Maples - Nice.
6) Japanese Cherry Trees - Nice.

In my small west bend town, In the old neighborhoods, all kinds of silver maple, ashes, including mountain ash, many lindens, norway maples, and few sweetgum, a few surviving elms. In the newer neighborhoods, the trees are more diverse and include all the new varieties of trees, like river birch, red maples, and non fruiting crab apples.

Residents have to get approval from the city to plant trees in the boulevard. No invasives allowed, nor any trees that harbor diseases. We have a good tree program
for this small city, for which I am grateful.
