Fragrant lily that blooms with Asiatic Lilies

Can anyone ID this lily, not so interested in the specific variety as I am in the type of lily. This one bloomed fairly early in the season for me. Picture was taken 6/18/6. About a third of my Asiatics bloomed before this one, the rest afterwards. I planted a mixed batch of asiatics only in this area 2 seasons ago.

This one bloomed for the first time this spring. Different flower type, taller than the asiatics, wider leaves, & had a nice quite strong scent. Flower was not as trumpety as the trumpets in bloom now and does not look at all like the LA hybrids I have, bloomed too early I think for an orienpet. Any ideas?

It looks very much like an Orienpet type to me. When was this planted? Did you plant them as bulbs last fall or this spring or as growing plants this spring.

It is quite early for an Orienpet to open in June so I'm a bit stumped myself.

It would be interesting to see if it repeats this early next year.

Thanks for your reply - it certainly looks like it could be an orienpet.

I only plant from bulbs, have never planted a potted lily. All my lilies have been planted in the fall and are from well known suppliers like Brent & Becky's, B&D Lilies, Dutch Garden's, & White Flower Farm. I do sometimes order mixed varieties or collections and take what I get, but these are usually all one kind - asiatics, LA, orientals, orienpets, etc.

Although this particular bed was planted with lilies for the first time in the fall of 2004, I do not have a picture of this one blooming last year (Spring/Summer 2005). I planted all asiatics in this bed in 2004.

I had forgotten when I first posted that I did add a handful of leftover later blooming bulbs in the fall of 2005 - this must be one of them - but why it bloomed a month early beats me.

The rest of those are in bud right now but have not bloomed yet and are about a foot taller. I was thinking at the time that these were orientals, but I did buy a mixed pack of yellow orienpets, which have to be somewhere. LOL

Anyway, we'll see next year if it blooms in mid June again!

Tracy, I believe you're supposed to keep green on until they fade..after everything brown and dies back then cut..the green gives nurishment to next yrs flowering..so plant in earth, and leave green growth on.. Are these lilies hardy in your area? Did you ask the clerk when you bought them? Toni

Your little brown bubblets (bulblets) are bulbils, growing in the axils of leaves (where the leaf meets the stem). Essentially, they are little bulbs growing in the air. They will not produce blooms up there, but you can plant them and produce an exact copy of the lily it came from. A lily reblooming in the manner you speak of is nonsense. There will be reblooming lilies coming into the market soon, but they rebloom because they produce additional stems that initiate multiple times during the growing season, not just in the spring. Hence, a sprout that comes up in mid June will bloom later than one that emerges in early May, and so you get "reblooming" from the same plant (but two separate stems).

Just a word of warning with old man winter getting ready to hit i would pick off the buds so the bulb can put more energy into next year's bloom. Unless you bring it inside. Then you could keep it. If you don't next year bloom will be quite dismill compared to this year.
