Repeat Blooming Asiatic Lilies?!?!?!?

Someone from a nursery told a friend of mine that if she cut back her lilies to a certain node they would repeat bloom. I told her I thought this sounded like nonsense, but I would ask the question of those in the know.

Is there any truth to this?

Well, my question is ---my lilies are setting little brown
bubblets on top of where the bloom was. These little bubblets are sending out small green blades? Is this new bulb or what? Should I let it grow and then plant it out for next year??????

there was a post on the "name that plant" forum that showed a pic of a very strangely growing plant, and someone said it was caused by fasciation. you may want to post this pic on the name that plant forum. maybe someone on that forum could tell you if this is caused by fasication. it was a new one on me. i happened to find this link about lilies and fasciation for what it's worth. Just saw a redbud tree with buds almost open! The weather conditions, long heat stress followed by rain and cooler temps must be fooling them into thinking it's spring. I hope they don't get zapped too hard later.

Yes you need to give your Lilies a chilling period. They will not bloom again inless they are given a period of about 6 weeks where they are frozen. It is best if you can leave them in the pot and freeze the whole thing. After that they will regrow. In zone 10 this is a problem willl bulbs that NEED to bew frozen like tulips, daffs, lilies, etc.

From what you are saying you purchased a pot of blooming lilies. I have seen them in the stores and they have incorrect info in the pots. I think these people should be in court. They are leading people to think these are indoor blooming plants. Alina they are saying cut them back and they will bloom again. But if you do not know you would think they are going to bloom again in the same year. Vague info that only an experienced gardener would know that they mean next year. jenbplus3, the correct info should be..... After the plants finish blooming and the leaves die. Cut the plant down and they will bloom next year. The Asiatic bloom in the Spring. The Orientals will bloom later either early summer or late summer. You will probably have blooms for 2 to 3 weeks from each plant but they only bloom once during that period and will come back the following year. They need a cool period to bloom the next year is the reason they should be planted outside. If you want to grow them in pots you will need to keep the pot outside in a protected area that it will get cold but not too much moisture so the bulb will not rot from being cold and wet. At this point do not water let them dry in the pot and finish browning. If you keep it moist the bulb will rot. I hope this helps.

Your little brown bubblets (bulblets) are bulbils, growing in the axils of leaves (where the leaf meets the stem). Essentially, they are little bulbs growing in the air. They will not produce blooms up there, but you can plant them and produce an exact copy of the lily it came from.

A lily reblooming in the manner you speak of is nonsense. There will be reblooming lilies coming into the market soon, but they rebloom because they produce additional stems that initiate multiple times during the growing season, not just in the spring. Hence, a sprout that comes up in mid June will bloom later than one that emerges in early May, and so you get "reblooming" from the same plant (but two separate stems).

Once a year at a show or sale, a member of the public will tell me about a reblooming lily. I just nod and smile and say "hey that's nice!" but I suspect they are talking about daylilies since "rebloomers" are part of the daylily world.

Lots of people confuse lilies (
) with daylilies ({{gwi:1034607}}). No true lily reblooms, but there are some daylilies that do.
