my sandy loam isn't coarse

All the instructions for soil prep for iris I have read distinctly say to use coarse sand. Recently we ordered 20 yards of sandy loam. It is a very fine sand and drains like a dream. Came from a river bottom. Does anyone have experience they can share about what the possible negative effects of this fine sandy loam might be to the over 100 cultivars I have on order that I plan to plant in it. We have mixed it with peat and some good garden soil and it looks great but I can see that it drains at an amazing rate. It looks like something I can even cover the normally uncoverd tops of rhizomes with to protect them from lots of direct sun and hard freezes we have here. I just don't want to get caught by something I haven't considered as a drawback.
