pebbles suitable iris mulch?

Hello,

I am brand new to Gardenweb and this is my first post. I have just started with irises; well, I planted rhizomes last fall and bought some blooming plants this spring. Because I shouldn't allow irises to stay wet, I don't want to use wood chips for mulch to keep the weeds down so I am wondering if small stones would be advisable? I know that weeds will still appear but I am hoping there will be fewer and they will be easier to pull.

Right now my beds are overrrun with lamb's quarters which I pull by the hundreds every weekend. I have read that lamb's quarters use lots of water but I also think they might cause the area around the irises to stay too wet as they grow right up close, REALLY close, to the irises.

If stones are good, should I keep them away from the base of the irises?

Thanks in advance for your help!
