How Many Could I Plant Here?

Aaaack! I've caught this "hosta bug" that's going around here! Initially, back in early Spring I decided to make a perennial bed at our back fence row (75' x 10'). I picked up a few day lilies and got some freebie miscellaneous plants from my parents and a neighbor. Then I discovered this forum . . . This morning I set out about 16 hostas and have 9 more to go. The problem is I've only got about 20' left. I tried to space them between 3 to 5 feet apart based on their mature size including leaving that amount of space against the back fence and the trees that are in the fence row. Twenty-five hostas in 750 sq. ft. of space should be doable, right? Maybe I misjudged my distance. Maybe I should plant them closer to the trees or fence. Maybe I should just plant them a little closer because you know 25 can't be the final number! I thought I could get a lot more in there!

pack them all in ....

you can move them in a few years ....

whoever came up with the idea of a perfect design .. and never having to move a plant again.. was confused about the reality of a garden ....

3 to 5 feet sounds about right... but for something to fill the 5 foot spacing.. is going to take 3 to 5 to 7 years .... you could have a whole bunch of smaller.. easy to move plants growing like weeds for a few years .. and then move them out when the monsters get to size ... NEVER move the monster ...

i use irrigation tape.. with drippers at 12 inch spacing ..... minis are set 2 feet apart .... small and small/med... 3 feet .... 4 feet for bigger meds.. and the monsters are 5 foot on center.. and that isnt even enough.. 10 years down the line ....

do you have grass??? what a waste.. lol .. there is always room for new beds ....

I like Kens advice...the smaller hostas make the new bed look nice and full and then when the bigger ones need more space, moving the smaller ones out is not that big a deal....and hopefully by that time you'll have gotten rid of some more grass. (-:

I did container planting for the first time this year. Used the 3 gallon buckets from Dollar Tree for a dollar each. After two months, i am really disappointed. The growth of all the plants is stunted, fruit inadequate in spite of adequate water food and sun. I was searching for reasons and found few articles on "root development of vegetable plants" I was surprised that most of them grow as much as 3-4 feet deep. There is no space in the buckets for that kind of growth. That is perhaps the reason my plants are not producing well. So, I am going to make real areas in the ground and transfer my plants into those. I like it too Anele, except the amount of lamps was surprising. Now durn, So 11 visible lamps is too much for a living room! I got all excited about adding more. After all, an official website/blog says do it.

How many Aeonium cuttings could I take from this?

At least three, unless you want to cut those long stems into sections of 6" long or so, in which case you'd get more. There are a few more months before these go dormant to get them rooted and growing.

Genera of greatest interest to me are Acharagma, Ariocarpus, Astrophytum, Aztekium, Cumarinia, Epithelantha, Geohintonia, Leuchtenbergia, Lophophora (some of these are ILLEGAL in the US), Obregonia, Ortegocactus, Pelecyphora, Stenocactus (spectacular wavy ribs), Strombocactus, Toumeya, Turbinicarpus. Many of these are regarded as difficult and I rarely see any mentioned in this forum. To be honest, Mike, if you are interested, do a google for pics, that will bring up much better ones than I can produce. But I am more than happy to answer any questions about my small collection.

I plant the "goodies" where I want them....then fill in with bits and pieces of rapid growers that I already have...
At least that's the way it think I am doing it!! LOL!

I did like Linda, planted in between and now it's move time for some. My poor El Nino is fighting for it's life and must be moved along with many others.

Maybe next year.

"Pack um in" is my favorite advice :) The 20 hostas I received from a friend are awesome. I just packed them in and will move them around in a year or 2. What I find as I enter my 4 year of planting here in my new home, is that plants come and go for no reason. Other plants thrive better than you imagine. Trust me... i just keep finding more places to put more plants.
