Out yesterday at twilight and knew it was time for some pics this morning-

On the shadier side of the path - Spring Fling, Ginko Craig, Devon Green, Pineapple UDC, Elizabeth Campbell, and Big Daddy trying to get some light.

Spring Fling mentioned in some recent discussions. Bird didn't think too much of it evidently. Baby Bunting trying to sneak camera time at the bottom and Maui Buttercups above-

Same side from reverse - Sparkling Burgundy, Pilgrim, Little Aurora, Journey's End, and Sleeping Beauty.

Journey's End leaves jumped in size and more upright this year. Edge of Night is the dark green over its shoulder.

Sunny Side - Liberty, green sport of Clifford's Comet(nice leaf shape), Key Lime Pie, yellow sport of Grand Tiara, Crepe Suzette (small on path), Cutting Edge, Blue Ivory (need to move), Spilt Milk, and Blue Wedgwood. Cutting Edge jumped from 4 eyes last year to 16 - waiting for it to finish leafing out to do a before and after pic comparison.

Spilt Milk is another that made a nice jump. Hesitate buying, but glad I did. Peeking along the top are Guacamole, a sport of Sun Power, Blue Hawaii, and Carnival behind trellis.

Great combinations of colors! Love the ferns and Sweet Woodruff. Your Sleeping Beauty is exceptional! Awesome color on the Blue Ivory! Ohhhh.... I could go on and on!

Is that Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla) in front of the rock?

Not sure where your son lives, Carol, but I'm in Northern California (not too far from Nancy) and I don't remember the last time I felt an earthquake. For sure not in the 7 years I've been in this house. Last one was probably 10 years ago, centered around Glen Ellen I think. Didn't knock anything over. Just tilted a picture or two on the wall. Since then, though, not even the slightest shake. And in the meantime, they keep retrofitting everything, so hopefully if/when the "big one" does hit in my lifetime, it won't be devastating. My joke about earthquakes vs tornadoes and hurricanes is, at least after an earthquake, I still know where all my stuff is. LOL I feel bad for the folks who have to deal with a ruined garden (among other things) right in the middle of summer. As someone who also works in insurance, I'm hoping we have another quiet hurricane season like we did last year.

Ciao all, I hope everyone had a great day out in the garden today. I know it's a back to work day for most people, but my goodness, what glorious weather to be outside. Thanks to all of you for such interesting trades and also for your knowledge and wisdom regarding perennials. I have SO much to learn about them still, thanks for your patience in answering my newbie questions. Tristan grabbed some things from the middle circle which I have no clue regarding the names of the plants or what sort of care they need, so as soon as I'm able, I'm hoping to post some pictures of them for ID. I'm so excited about all the lilacs! They're small, but I know they'll fill that space nicely and I can't wait to discover what colours they turn out to be. I put the dahlias in full sun and just barely covered the root/tuber/rhizome thingies. I hope that's what they need. Tomatoes/eggplants/peppers/tomatillos/basil all got a full day outside and tomorrow will be their first major dose of full sun. I'm hoping to get them in the ground before the weekend. Duane finished 2 additional tomato beds as a birthday present for me and got all the 8' stakes in this morning. The soaker hoses are all in place and now it's just a matter of waiting a few days for the plants to get fully hardened off. Big hugs to all of you, I wish the weather had been more pleasant but it was still a very fun event and thanks again to sydseeds for organizing the swap and for everyone's wonderful enthusiasm and generosity. Like many others, I prepared very well for the hurricane. New batteries for my big Maglite flashlight, several cans of tuna and other eat-from-the-can stuff, filled every pitcher with water and put it in the fridge, bought plastic sheeting in case a window got slammed by a flying branch, parked my car away from any trees, even laid in a good supply of hurricane food for my lizards (in the form of waxworms). Very fortunately, I did not lose either electricity or telephone service, as did some of my friends here in Flushing or on Long Island. We got somewhere between 7 and 8" of rain from Hurricane Irene. I saw that the low spots on the street were flooded. The winds maxed out at about 65 mph or so, resulting in a few downed trees and many downed limbs and leaves. We had a tornado right here last year, so that already thinned the herd of rotten branches, plus the post-tornado tree trimming that was done. My hostas were completely unaffected, as they are close to the ground. The only thing I noticed (and corrected) was that bunches of oak leaves, some with acorns, had been scattered over them. I picked all of those up, and voila, everything is back to normal. The two 8" clay pots of geraniums which sit upon a 6" high garden border fence were knocked over, but the geraniums were fine and the pots didn't break. All I had to do was put them back in place. I will tell you that Saturday night was pretty scary, laying in bed and trying to sleep when you didn't know whether the window would suddenly implode from the wind. My cats felt the same way and were all huddled up with me. Fortunately, the windows were fine, nothing broke. I just hope that we don't have either any more tornados OR hurricanes around here!

What's that one just to the right of the sleeping beauty in the front? The colour are very close to the little one here (it's still young though, so quite small compared to that one...)

Love the garden,Paul! It reminds me a lot of mine,with all the color combinations. The only thing is,mine has more slanted ground. Nice job combining all the other companion plants. Phil

Love it, Paul! I wonder why yours looks great and I feel mine just looks crowed? How far do you let them go in touching or filling in gaps before you move something or divide it (if you do)

I also see you also use one of my favorite shade plants with the hosta, a miniature Bleeding Heart!

Thanks all for the comments.

Gesila - yes, that is Lady's Mantle. Normally it gets nipped by the rabbits -- but we have a fox around this year and I've only seen one rabbit. Maybe it'll get a chance to bloom this year.

Mary - it's starting to fill in nicely. I'm a little over planted, so a couple of hosta will need to be relocated.

on_greenthumb, the chartreuse/yellow one is Daybreak - still waiting to see if it can hold it's own between Striptease and Sleeping Beauty, both have grown really well. May have to move to give it more space.

pagrdnr - Sweet Woodruff - 1 small pot is all you need - I swear it spreads during the winter under the snow.

Phil - 2/3 of my lot is wooded, and my garden are mostly designed to feel like paths thru the woods.

Chris, you're like me -- aren't we all a bit too critical of our own gardens. I like them just touching or a bit more, else filling between with other types of plants. I try to leave room based upon final size - but hey it doesn't always work. In this garden I purposely put in some small hosta to fill gaps figuring I'd have to move them in a few years as the Mediums and Larges filled out. Figured the sun would give 'em a head start before being moved. Split some to fill out gardens when first starting - but now the goal is mature plants, so haven't split any in 3-4 years.

Just glorious, Paul!! I love how you put them together and all the extra's around them.

btw--that 'Cutting Edge' will swallow that side of the path, before too long! Mine is in a whiskey barrel,
which probably means it could be even larger than it is and it's really big! I'll try to snap a pic. later!

Again, your gardens are so beautifully put together!

Well, Paul--cornered hubby to help me photograph mine with a measurement of approximately 47" from longest tip to longest tip:

Hope you can see the closeup number!

I don't know if I did this correctly but hubby held up the leaf on the left to start the measurement from and I did the same on the other end!
Of course he had to drop his leaf to take the pic.--whatever--it's big!

Sorry about the holes--hail damage that I'm thankful was not worse than what I have! I have friends fairly nearby (5 miles and less) that had
their hosta completely smashed to the ground, with not a leaf or petiole left attached! A hosta summer lost for them--so sad, but so thankful
it was not a whole lot worse for them and us all in our area, as it was in other states!!! The hosta WILL return, but loss lives, of course...!

Thanks for the pics - do you suppose I could have visitors jump over.... So I guess a year or two and then time to move it. I should have problems like this with all my hostas.
