Protecting hydrangea in zone 5b Ohio

I've read a lot on this forum about winter protecting hydrangeas, especially hayseedmans thread lol. But, I'm wondering, if I cage the hydrangea with chicken wire and burlap around it (both of which I have already done), do the leaves have to be in plastic bags or can they be loose shredded leaves that I just stuff in there?

Most threads tell of surrounding the plant with those black plastic bags. I could do that but do I have to have the leaves in bags?

This is my first hydrangea and I want to protect it right. It's a F&E Blue Heaven, which I know can die back here and come back next year with blooms, but it blooms on new wood and old, and I would like to try saving the old buds too as our growing seasons pretty short.

Hi Kentstar - My zone is a bit lower than yours & have Nikko as my most meticulously, Winter protected, Hayseedman style (not a single bloom despite!) I don't think you really need to bag leaves for an F&E ... I assume that your young F&E-Blue Heaven's canes are still not difficult to bundle up loosely & covered with dry fallen leaves before wrapping with burlap. The cage surround then, can be filled with more dry collected fallen leaves (or pine needles) ... add more as they mat down. I'd also water a few times during dormancy, if there's not enough snow (igloo-like protection & source of moisture). For my marginal bloomers I wrap black landscaping-fabric around the cage, to cut down on the devastating Winter winds from Canada - very famous in our area.

Our past Winter was quite a challenge to many plants, bushes & even trees because of the huge fluctuation in temps, as well as prolonged warm, sunny days to boot. A few of my protected Hs did not produce & the ones we expected to be reliably floriferous, produced less. However, others (all Lacecaps) defied all those threats, as if they just slept through it all, bloomed more than the previous year ... I did heavily mulch their bases!

I posted some of my pics in another thread ... wonder if you had a chance to see how I did my over-wintering? The cardboard box method also works very well. *Hydrangeas Hydrangeas* site has a good description of it ... I've tried it on younger shrubs.

Awesome site, thankyou! I've got it bookmarked now lol. I think I might have to try that caged in styrofoam lid contraption! All I would need is the styrofoam lid. I did wonder about whether the heavy snows we sometimes get would weigh down the leaves in the cage, exposing the buds.
Well, good. It's put to bed now, and we'll see what we shall see. I've got her nice and snuggly tucked in for winter. I did end up using oak leaves and pine straw. I do have extra leaves put aside for settling, but I think I only have four more bags of shredded leaves. Yikes, I hope now that that will be enough! lol
Maybe I'll have to collect a few more. ugh!

Update on blackberry winter survival (three weeks later)… Uncovered Plants - Black Satin (no winter damage). These were low to ground so maybe some snow protection. - Triple crown (some winter damage) - approx. 20% die back). Seem to have handled the winter fine but some dieback, primarily on the thinner canes). - Ouachita (some winter damage) - approx. 10% die back). Almost no dieback…surprising because I thought they would be less hardy than other erect varieties. - Kiowa (significant winter damage - approx. 75% die back). At first I thought these had overwintered well, but two of the four plants didn’t leaf out and the other two were significantly damaged. This variety has had some health problems over the last two years with (2 of 6 previously dying). Since this year’s crop was a loss and I have had problems with this variety in the past, I decided to replace them with a newer, thornless variety: Von Blackberry. - Prime Ark 45 (significant winter damage - approx. 50% die back). Honestly, some of the dieback may be from the primocane fruiting sections from last fall, but what is left seems to be growing well now. I think I’ll make these a primocane only crop after this season. - Wild Treasure Trailing. In ground planting - left uncovered and plant died back to ground. Potted planting (covered) lost most of its cane length. Given space and effort, not sure this variety is worth keeping. - All raspberries were uncovered and nearly all had no noticeable winter damage. I even had a blackhawk black raspberry and two double gold raspberry plants in pots just sitting in the open and both plants are growing really well and blooming. - I did have two canes on the Cascade Delight raspberry that died during the winter but I believe that was partly due to exposed roots from some soil erosion in their raised bed. Covered Plants. - Black Diamond. I decided to give it a reprieve and let it grow again this year but spray it for cane borers. I had to remove all of last year’s growth due to cane borers but this year it has three times as much growth (e.g. canes) and looks healthy. There’s already a 8” of growth this season and that’s a lot for this variety in my climate. - Siskiyou. No winter damage. Both plants look good and have been putting on amazing growth (well, at least amazing compared to my previous attempts). These second year plants each have 5 or more canes and the cane diameter has doubled since last year. The primocanes are already about ½ inch thick (e.g. diameter) and about 12” in length so far. Yeah! Last year’s growth is getting ready to bloom. - Kotata. No winter damage and the plants are growing new canes. I have 2-3 new canes per each plant and there’s about 6-8” of growth so far. Less vigorous growth from these plantings. - Thorny Boysenberry. The non-potted plants suffered the trifecta of cold weather, cane borers, and voles, so I have maybe 10% of the canes from last year but they are getting ready to bloom. I have had problems with leaf spot on these but I gave them a good lime-sulfur spray treatment this spring, so hopefully this will help. New growth has been outstanding with the cane diameter doubling, much like the Siskiyou blackberries, and there are 8-10 canes per planting with 12-18” of growth already. I’m going to do a better job of protecting these in the winter this year. - Marionberry. I lost about 50% of the cane length from the overwintering period but have learned more about what not to do while preparing them for winter. Plants seem fine but not as vigorous as Siskiyou or Boysen but more vigorous than Kotata. - Loganberry. I lost about 75% of the canes on these from cane borers and the cold. These may be the least cold hardy of the trailing berries that I own. The primocanes are growing vigorously though.

I'm in zone 5. I have Nikko blue, glowing ember and endless summer. Endless Summer is one those that you either love or hate, for me right now its just stupid evergreen. The ones that I've seen done well is Nikko blue, which I love to mess with the color, Pee Gee and oakleaf. While these are hardy to zone 4, I think, winter protection is key.

If this plant is hardy on zone 6 then all you need to do is to keep it well mulched (about 3-4" thru the drip line). If the plant is not hardy to zone 6 then check the information on the link below. The two approaches discussed in the link are: 1) cover the shrub with chicken wire and fill it up with leaves (really pack them in as they serve as insulators); 2) place a cardboard on top of the shrubs and press downwards slowly (the stems will bend) so the stems lie almost flat (hold the cardboard with rocks and add leaves on top). Blooms develop near the tips so it is important to protect the stem tips with lots of leaves. When doing the chicken wire thing, allow for several inches between the end of the stems and the sides/top of the chicken wire cage. The more separation, the more protection but pack those leaves good in there. Also, keep a reserve of unused leaves in a plastic trash bag as leaves sometimes settle and you may need to add more in mid winter (use mulch if you run out). Hi Patty, I actually bought Peter's book as a preorder from Amazon after reading about him and his book in Fine Gardening. I gave him his very first Amazon review and got a very sweet thank you note from him! I love the book and he seems to be very realistic and non biased in his assessment of a rose's performance when guaging his assessments against the few roses I already had like Easy Elegance 'Centennial' and 'Julia Child'. I had purchased several roses prior to his book and was happy to see that many I purchased came highly recommended by him. I have 2 'Poseidon' and these so far have bloomed nicely and are very healthy, and performing as he stated. We both garden in same zones and similar conditions although he is more coastal ME and I'm more inland MA. I would love to see his gardens but don't know if they're open to the public. He's only about 2 hours from me so it would be great to meet him and discuss roses with someone who is so knowledgeable. Whiteout is interesting. I just bought (against my better judgement since it's so late in the season) 2 Radler Rambling Red Climbers from High Country Roses (gallon size so hoping they'll be well established) 2 own root Double Pink Knockout Roses and 2 Livin Easy from a vendor on Etsy. Keep your fingers crossed that we have a loooong fall, lol. It's always a gamble here on when old man you know who will arrive! Sharon

Hi Kentstar - Congratulations!!! Now you can come over & help me put together my 12 wire cages ... working with gloves is quite trying to patience as one folds end wires to hold together!!! Â:(

I still have 'til Thanksgiving to get this annual musts, accomplished ... bags & bags of dried fallen leaves awaits patiently on our porch for this great adventure!!! Â;) IMHO ... unshredded oak leaves won't mat down as easily, pine needles, as well, I find excellent pads around the canes, inside the burlap wraps ... shredded leaves are excellent mulch - holds moisture & protects the stems close to the surface. Our devastating *Killing-Winter* of '08-'09 decimated many of the old canes of my Nikko & Lacecaps that I very seriously protect & yet, all but Nikko & LOD, were quite floriferous this season ... the stems barely on the ground surface, protected by the heavy mulching save this '09 season of blooms!!!

I spent these past weeks, since 23 Oct dealing with this *Bumper-Crop-Year* of my beloved Ginkgo Tree ... raking, scooping, sweeping, nit-picking, bagging, etc, etc, etc ... 4+weeks of must-do, lest I'll be lost in a Ginkgo jungle & this prolific *Prince turned Duchess* will be removed from the *Red list of endangered plants by the IUCN*

In case you're curious to view my endeavor, I posted in the Trees Forum - *So you think you really like to grow a Ginkgo Tree?* or so thread! I can breathe a bit easier now that my beloved Prince/Duchess is naked of golden cloak & just a hundred, perhaps, babies still holding bravely in her arms!

Here is a pic of the last 20 gallons hauled away yesterday ... Of the 31+ bags I singlehandedly enslaved on ... I'm not called *Glut for Punishment* for nothing, by my family!!! Â;) or Â:((( for smelling of Wintergreen-aching-back-relief overnite! ugh!!!

Again Congrats & Happy Floriferous 2010!!!
