Hydrangeas on sale at Lowes-advise me!

I do not know anything about hydrangeas. Lowes has a bunch of them for 50% off. I can't remember all the varieties but there was an Endless Summer.

I bought a variegated one two years ago that didn't survive the winter. I'm in zone 6, 3000 ft.

What should I look for that will survive the winter and actually bloom here?

I do have a tall white one that blooms every summer. I don't know what it is. These at Lowes are different colors which I am hoping some will work here. Thanks!

There is a rule for microclimates -I cannot remember it exactly- that suggests that temperature goes down by 1 degree for every 300ft so, a suggestion would be to consider looking at their labels and choose plants good in Zone 5 (or less) rather than Zone 6.

Endless Summer and Blushing Bride are examples of Macs advertised good in Zone 5.

Paniculatas are also more cold resistant than macrophyllas. If you really like to have some macrophyllas, you still can grow them there but look to see if they are good in Zone 5 and, if they are not and you really want them, be ready to apply winter protection techniques.

Wow, I'm glad I'm not that cynical and suspicious. We're just happy gardeners who like a good plant-related bargain. Yeah, it does depend on the individual store. I have two within 10 minutes of my house. One has a larger garden center and thus more space to keep all the plants well displayed. The smaller one is the one with the great clearance rack. I guess they can't afford to have plants past their prime in prime display locations, so they clear them out. Connie, I'm still laughing about the dandelion sale. That's too funny. i dont understand the 3 names above the one plant ... are you asking the name??? the azul part of this makes no sense to me: PICEA AZUL FAT ALBERT and the 3rd name is not much better ... as it really isnt a name.. its either P p glauca pendula.. or it isnt.. otherwise it simply means.. a BLUE[glauca] blue spruce.. which is redundant ... anyway... the future of this plant is in the buds... of which i can not focus on ... if properly planted.. and it winters over well enough [who knows how stressed it is] ... and the buds trigger in spring.. you will have a plant ... as to how it will need to be pruned.. and what becomes of the damaged parts we can not predict ... but one thing for sure.. in about 5 years .. when it doubles in size.. those injured parts will not be an issue ... those parts .. look like they were pruned for shipping.. or the plant was field grown too close to its neighbor.. or they were too close together at the store ... dont worry about them .. we can take another look early next summer.. after the flush of new growth.. and selectively remove whatever did not bud out ... do you know how to properly plant a conifer... as it now stand.. with the damage.. we probably can not give you a name.. until it starts achieving a more realistic form ... Yep - wait a yr. better yet 2yrs for those biennials. Mark as they come up. When I inherited my garden I waited for 2yrs before digging anything out unless I knew exactly what it was and if it didn't fit into my grand scheme of things. For the things that I just wasn't sure about I moved them around back to a new bed while I contemplated they're outcome. Things that were in overabundance or that I could immediately identify as they started to come up and didn't want I bagged or boxed the root systems, wrote up an info sheet about what it was and it's care and set it all out on my front lawn w/ a sign that said free. I did this for a few yrs. until my garden was all situated. By far this was one of the most rewarding experiences that I ever had! People would wait yearly for my annual give away. I often have a hard time striking up conversation w/ strangers (I'm def. stranger shy - not much of a small talker - people think I'm just B!@#$% and stand offish - I'm really just conversationally challenged and live in my head) but man cuold I go on talking w/ all of the folks who would stop by - telling them all about the plants and the possibilities. It was wonderful! Often people would come get stuff when I wasn't home and I would come home to the most lovely notes. 2 stand out in my mind: 1. An older couple who planted some of my coneflower in their back yard and how that night they sat outside having tea and enjoying it. 2. The lady that sold her house and was moving out of the country. She'd dumped all of her money into the move at the end of the Summer and couldn't afford her annual garden plantings. She left me a note to 'The Generous Gardner' and I still have it yrs. later in my bedside table drawer. If I ever had a store that's what I decided I'd call it. Kids would come around while I gardened and ripped stuff out to give away. Little girls would go away happy and elementary school aged boys would take clumps of coneflower for their mom's. There's nothing more beautiful then a Friendship Garden!

Buyin home at sheriff sale. Need advise

Kabir: The questions you are asking tell me you are not going to do well in a Sheriff's auction sale. Get a Real Estate attorney in your jurisdiction and work with her/him so that you have all the details necessary in place before you show up at the auction. Here in Milwauakee, Wisconsin, when any property goes on the Sheriff's auction block, there is NO MINIMUM starting bid. If the lein holders want a minimum amount, they have to bid along with everyone else. Some of the buyers hereabouts take cash with them to Sheriff's auctions, but most take certified bank checks premade out to the Sheriff's department. All of the few that I know are preapproved or cash rich. Using certified bank checks, you can't lose the money by accident or being mugged. If you insist on taking cash, let me know what time you will be there and meet me in the alley out back. Ruudman

Luis, thanks so much for that microclimate tip!! That is going to be useful to me.

I hope to go to Lowes today and see! I saw the hydrangeas on Monday and wish I had written down the names. I just remember the Endless Summer for sure and there may have been Blushing Bride too. That sounds familiar. They had half of one of their long tables full of hydrangeas. All their trees, shrubs and perennials are 50% off right now.

well, it was all for naught:-( All the hydrangeas were gone already except one variety that was not hardy. Sigh.
But I'll have the zone info for the next time. Thanks!

There is always next year... and there is always the almost-dead-but-not-fried-yet plant section at Lowes! Usually full of sickly looking tropicals this time of the year though...

Yes, I checked the almost-dead section too :-) They were in the the worst shape I've seen. I have often found good deals in that section but this year they were truly almost dead.

So I'll wait until next year.

Hey, you can still check out the almost-dead-but-still-barely-alive section of hydrangeas at Home Depot!!! LOL

I know that the clearance price is very tempting... and trust me, I LOVE clearance sales, but for my hydrangeas, I decided that I would rather choose the healthy and disease-free ones than those almost dead clearance ones... and then I would save on something else instead! :-)

Thank you! The first hydrangeas I saw actually looked very good. They were 50% off, but I didn't know if they were winter hardy and would bloom here so I didn't get any. Then when I went back they were gone except for the non-hardy variety. Every tree, shrub and perennial at Lowes was 50% off that week.
