WANTED: Wanted; pomegranate that bears fruit in our humidity

The reason I have posted here is because, Pomegranates have not done so well here in SE Louisiana. It seems they are not too fond of high humidity and or wet feet.

Some local "experts" have informed me that I would stand a much better chance of success if I managed to get a plant or cutting from a Pomegranate grown in a similar environment. Of course, from a tree that reliably sets fruit.

I am willing to be very generous in this trade. We are just rebuilding from the flood of hurricane Katrina and I would love to have 1 or 2 Pomegranates in the new yard.

I have the following plants to offer;

Several amaryllis, sun tolerant caladiums, parsley,

Sago palm pups, rain lilies, fig cuttings, Mondo grass, Liriope, Aztec grass, Asian Jasmine cuttings, Sweet potato vine cuttings(ornamental)

Seeds I have;

Tomato; Better Boy, Super Sweet 100, Cherokee Purple (Heirloom),

Black From Tula (Heirloom), MariannaÂs Peace (Heirloom), RIESENSTRAUBE, KELLOGGS BREAKFAST

2 Bitter Melons, 3 Asian cucumbers, 6 sweet peppers, 2 summer squash (bush) 3 summer squash (vines), 3 eggplants, 4 melons, New Zealand and Malabar spinach

I have an even larger list of cool-season vegetable seeds. Please send me an email if you are interested.

I live in Baker, Louisiana and am slowly turning my back yard into a grove of various fruit trees. 'Wonderful' seems to be a very common variety grown in Louisiana. Seems like no variety is perfect because of our humidity, and soil type. I planted mine as a 3ft bush in Feb 2008 in a sandy well drained area. I suspect if you can find or make a well drained area you might be successful. I will try hand pollinating as well. Incorporating sand along a natural ridge in your landscape might be helpful. I will try to remember to let you know how mine does.

Just about to plant a "wonderful" pomegranate that I picked up at a local nursery in slidell. Hoping to have some luck. Have you found out much information on people that grow locally?

I have pomegranate (old tree, unknown variety, tasty fruit) that needs trimming anyway. I recently got some cuttings from a volunteer fig - the owner calls it 'strawberry fig', because it tastes like strawberries. She doesn't like figs, but loves this one. I have a lemon verbena, I think I can divide it, I'll have to take a look and see how it is doing. I'm looking for open pollinated zucchini, eggplant & tomato seeds.

Thanks for the ideas on planting-- Lack of rain is the big problem here. Some summers we have 2 straight months with no rain at all. I think my soil drains well in most areas of the yard, and the front and back yards where I would put the trees both slope downhill away from the trees, which I suppose is good. I plan to mix the soil in the hole with compost and maybe some peat moss?? We definitely have the cold nights, even on hot days, if that is what honeycrisp likes! I do not know about the rust, will have to ask around. One of the reasons I want apples and plums is that those are the abandoned trees I see all over the place that produce like crazy, despite the fact that no one is taking care of them. The family isn't too into pears. And I thought peaches were difficult? I never see peach trees here. My husband loves apricots but then he is from California :) Also I read in a few places that Liberty would not work for my zone? We do have late spring/early fall frosts, maybe that is the problem? I love the raintree catalogue! The problem is, I still feel pretty lost with all the varieties to choose from. And western WA where raintree is is really a different climate from Eastern, much wetter and with milder winters. I tried to call them several years ago when I ordered for our old house and didn't find much help, but maybe I didn't know who to ask for, or which questions to ask. The biggest problem with my first attempt at fruit trees at the other house was deer. Even when I moved them all to the backyard, the kids would sometimes leave a gate open. The honeycrisp was too damaged and didn't make it, though the other 2 (which I don't remember the varieties . . .) were trucking along ok. Also I didn't realize that I needed to water so much to get things established. . . live and learn. Most of the trees survived and are growing along but we moved before I could get to the fruiting stage. At least in our new place we are nowhere near a deer route! If you could plant 3 easy but yummy (I like tart, though not as tart as granny smith--my favorites from the store are pink lady, honeycrisp and jonagold) apples, and 2 plums, which ones would you choose? FWIW, the 1s my dad planted years ago did just fine - only 1 left now, but the fruit is very good, if not as smooth & pretty as the kind in the markets - likely because it receives no special care, other than keeping the rats off the fruit w/ a bait station. Sorry, I do not know the variety, but I believe he ordered them from Park Seed. This is located near salt water in Treasure Island, in sandy, shelly soil.

I just joined gardenweb, and saw your listing. I bought several pomegranates from a man from Louisiana at the Truck Crop Experimental Station fall vegetable show in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. I've been growing them in Jackson Ms and got a dozen pomegranates from them last year. Delicious!

The man who sold them said they take 4 years to produce fruit, but they are worth the wait! I am starting some cuttings right now from stump sprouts. If they root I could let you know.

The 'Wonderful' should be good if that nursery in Slidell can be trusted. The one I have is not a wonderful but is a little lighter in color of the aril (the juicy part around the seed). It is absolutely wonderful, tho!

Anyway, hope you had luck with your pomegranates!

I have aPomegranate Tree It bears massive amounts of fruit but unfortunatly our weather in London is not suitable to eat. But the flowers and the fruit is an amasing display .Iam triyng to find an other tree so far no luck

A guy named Ray sells them in Metairie. You can find his number on the new orleans craigslist under farm and garden or the hollygrove market.He has better variety than wonderful he has sharp velvet , red
sash, and pink satin. buy one that has a flower already on it.

i bought a POM fruit a few years ago, and threw the seeds in a container... i kept finding seedlings popping up and transplanted them... after giving a few away, i have 4 plants 4ft tall. and 2 or 3 more smaller ones...2 producing fruit... the fruit are a little smaller than the store ones, and not as red colored, but taste good.

i think most POMS are grown from seed, and not grafted anyway

i can trade you a smaller one if you want ? what fig do you have ?
