Need an answer, PLEASE!

I have an Annabelle in it's third year. It has grown huge (7X8) and in the 2 previous years has bloomed very well. Now, (and this is hard to believe) 1/2 the bush has annabelle blooms in varying stages of development, and the other half has what looks like white lacecap blooms in varying stages of development. The Annabelle side appears to have the same foliage, only deeper green. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Wait and see.
I noticed the same phenomenon on part of my well established stand of Annabelle. Those flowerhead are not fully developed yet while standard mopheads already in a white stage.
Let's keep each other posted.
P.S. As a 'theory' for a moment, I'm guessing that it might be a by-product of cross-polonation with growing nearby 'White Dome'.

I see you are in Ct..? What part? I am in Wilton, Fairfield Cty. I remember vaguely that a mophead florist hydrangea that I planted as an experiment several years ago did more or less the same thing. It has since had lacecap-type blooms, but with big florets like a mophead. I don't know of a lacecap like that. It is planted near a hedge of blue lacecaps (unknown variety)....I wonder if this is a typical occurance and if my Annabelle is doing the same thing....I have several varieties in my yard. Near this Annabelle is a Tardiva and a couple of Nikkos, but no lacecaps. I would love to know the answer. TIA

If it helps the refrigerator pickles we made last fall are still good. We made up several jars following a recipe that was rather sweet. We have about 1/4 of the last jar left. I was rather surprised how good they still were when I found one more jar of them a few weeks ago tucked back behind the molasses.

Heartzlink,welcome. I tried wintersowing for the first time last year. Before that I barely knew how to get a plant from the store and transplant it. Since then I became obsessed and read every book, every site, every piece of advice I could get my hands on. I had spent a few years trying to amend my soil. Decided last year that it was now or never. (still on my first cup of coffee. Bear with me) The wintersowing is basically foolproof. I use milk jugs, two liters, 20oz. bottles, anything that will hold dirt. Can't believe my homeowners association didn't complain last winter.I had 1/2 of my tiny plot of land covered with jugs which probably looked like trash to them. But come spring, I had the prettiest garden in the neighborhood. As for seeds swaps you might want to look into meetup.com. They have people from your area ( well, all area's but it goes by city) that that sign up for things that they are interested in and gardening is usually an option. I joined one here that was organized by "spencersmom" who sometimes posts here. Transportation is an issue for me so I haven't been able to go as much as I would have liked but the one I did go to was so much fun. A ton of great people. I just got back from the Richmond area a few days ago. Henirco County.Not sure if I spelled that right. We found a beautiful house for sale with 3/4 of an acre, which is huge compared to what I have now. And I mean HUGE! We are in the process of getting it and if all goes well, we will be moving there by next year. If all doesn't go well we will be looking into the Highland Springs area. That's where my mom is and she is getting older and I would like to be close. But the economy is in such a state that moving right now is not an option. Don't want to give up hubbie's job and our health insurance til I know we have something lined up and more in our savings. For me it is a crap shoot every year when I plant in the summer. I don't start new seeds, but plant rooted cuttings. Years when we get good even rain and some periods of 80 degree weather, those plants do well. On years like the last couple where it has been drought conditions and 90++ degree days, I have not been able to baby them through the heat. Years like the last two I have had better luck nurturing my first plants until the cooler weather returns. My summer weather is affected greatly by hurricane activity and how the storms track.

This has been a dismal summer for baking/cooking in my solar ovens due to all the rain (which is most unusual in Kansas this time of the year), so I've been doing nearly all my baking in my Sharp Convection/Microwave Oven. I make all our breads and baked goods, even our crackers, so the Sharp has gotten a work-out this summer. I try to use it over my regular oven because it saves time and energy and helps keep the heat out of the kitchen. The smaller appliance takes less energy. I can reduce the baking time by 25-50% for most things and get the same results as using a regular oven. That's the convection feature (hot air moved around the chamber by a fan). I also reduce the temperature by 25-degrees for most things, once again, that's common with any convection oven. But the unit uses a combination of microwave/convection cooking unless you choose convection only. I can bake two loaves of yeast bread (standard-size loaves) in 20-minutes and NO pre-heating necessary. I had a counter top model 15-years ago, but it didn't have the large capacity the over-the-range Sharp Convection/Microwave has. I can bake 12-muffins or a 9x13-inch cake pan in the Sharp. I can roast meat, bake a 12-inch pizza, or evenly thaw a pound of ground beef in 5-6 minutes without cooking it, bake cookies (I use 3 12-inch pizza pans at once), melt a stick of butter or make popcorn in a microwave popcorn maker. I wouldn't be without one. I haven't looked at new models (mine is 11-years old), and I'm not sure what's available these days, but if the Sharp died, I'd quickly replace it with a convection/microwave again. -Grainlady

After I posted the first time I went out to inspect it closely and found the following:
-X-type flowerheads has a flattish dome appearance vs A-'s round ball, but still not as flat as 'normal' lacecaps,
-X-type flowerhead consists mostly of sterile flowers, but every individual florets is smaller than those of A's,
-foliage on a stems that bearing X-type flowers are distinctly larger than A's,
-while A-type blooms are mostly fully developed and in white stage, X-types are in a various stages with only a few being white.
Have to inspect stems tomorrow in a daylight.

WOW! Maybe you guys have discovered an "Incredi-cap" - a new lacecap type that is incredibly hardy and larger!!! LOL!

Can I see some photos please?

George, you are too funny with the "X-type" - that sounds like a Jaguar to me... :-)

Annabelle can "revert" to wild. Don't know why, don't know how, but it does happen. She's pretty closely related to the wild hydrangea. Me, I'd take a shovel and split that thing in two, but that's just me.

I'm leaning toward 'reversion' diagnosis, but...in no way I'd showel prune it...I like 'it' (whatever it is) and especially how those two types looks mixed together.

P.S. Ostrich, no new pictures from me this year.
I lost a bet to my wife and now prohibited to post any new pictures till spring of 2010 :-(

I guess neither one of us individualy or combined could do that. She'll take bets only on a stock market direction/performance....and she's good at that :-)
Otherwise how would I afford to garden? :-)))

AFter investigating I'm sure that 1/2 my Annabelle has reverted back to wild. I will leave it alone for now. I wonder, If I leave it alone, will the rest of the plant revert in time or will it stay as is? Thanks again, George.

I wouldn't touch it either - if nothing else, certainly a garden curiosity!!!

... but isn't Annabelle the child of White Dome? Wonder who her daddy is??? LOL
