This year it seems to be Sea Gulf Stream. I just did the ammonia treatment last evening.

I don't have them at this house, but when I had several Allan P. McConnell...those were slug bait.

I am working hard to stay away from slug magnets at this house, so I will be watching closely to the responses. Ummm...I just bought a Fragrant Blue & haven't planted it yet. Rats! I thought it was pretty resistant to slugs. At least I know your experiences. Maybe it gets better as the plant matures?.?.?.? Maybe?.?.?...

Last year I planted some variegated lirope and they attract more slugs than any hosta I have right now.

For me, by far it's 'Guacamole', which I guess it's a travesty since it grows quickly and is very common and inexpensive.

I've sent all my slugs and snails off though with liberal raiding parties, a big tub and drop them out into the huge greenbelt well behind my home. Just wish slugs would eat himalayan blackberry!!

I don't have a particular one this year,but last year it was Red October. This year,since it's in a chimney flue planter I think I have conquered last years problem by spraying frequently with ammonia/water solution.. BTW,Fragrant Blue has been great this year. It is not a slug magnet here! I think I should say that slugs have never been a huge problem for me. I don't ever use slug bait,because I think that just attracts them to the hostas. I do use fine pine bark mulch all the time,also. Using the ammonia spray has done more than anything I ever tried. Phil

Jimmy Crack Corn is riddled with slug holes, same as last year this time.

For the past few years it's been White Christmas for me. Such a beautiful hosta but gets extremely tattered by the end of the year.
Yes Gayle, Allan P McConnell is also a bad one for slugs.
This year I'm doing a lot of "slug hunting" in the early morning and seems to be helping some. What is the ammonia solution and is there any bad side effects?

Hottsey Tottsey is the first one that the slugs decimate. It goes down pretty early in the season and is pretty well shredded by the end of the season.

Golden Tiara lasts a bit longer is only half shredded by the end of the season.

These two are consistent slug magnets for me. Other hostas have good years and bad years. I don't recall Allan P McConnell being bad last year. And Sea Gulf Stream was only bad the year that I did a lot of watering.

As I have no more space to plant more hostas, new varieties have to show some distinction to make it into my garden and old ones with faults will have to go in order to make space. Slowly, my garden will have only specimens that are good garden plants and pass the 20 or 30 foot rule.

My Pilgrims seems to be the most eaten looks like swiss cheese. Unfortunately it is in the front yard for everyone to see. Last year it was the same, even the Patriots and Undulatas that are near it don't get eaten half as much.

This is the worst year so far for slugs for me. We've had a very, very wet spring. By far Brenda's Beauty is the worst for me. Followed closely by Olive Branch and Niagara Falls. Allen P. McConnell has always been a slug magnet for me. Almost everything except the very thick ones have holes in them this year, even with Sluggo.

Hands down Peppermint Ice. I've been very diligent with the sluggo but we've been having almost constant rain for the last week and a half, almost two. Right now there are NO leaves just some little 1" petioles sticking out of the ground. At this rate I won't have to worry about it next year :(

My Allan P McConnell is about 4-5 feet away and they haven't touched it.

Mine used to be Cherry Berry until I put her in a pot. They still climb up to find her just not as bad.

I tried to publish a picture of my million holes H. 'Eos', but I just can't figure out howto on Gardenweb.
It is a mature specimen that was under attack during one week; now I can see the soil under it looking from above.

Almost no slugs here, but tons of vine grape snails. Most of them haven't survived my frantic counter strike (4 times ammonia spray in 2 weeks time).
Another snail favorite is H. 'Green Acres', but I suppose that's beacause it is one of the first to emerge, and there is little else to eat.
The snails also seem to be able to locate anything with H. 'Niagara Falls' genes in it.

I don't see any slug damage yet. Last year Paradise Expectations had lots of small holes but most of my hosta escaped attack. Surprising because I see slugs and trails on the walks in the morning.

I put down Bugetta (?) last night. Wasn't it Slugetta at one time? Is this the stuff that can kill your pets?

I'm with Ken. The most inappropriately named hosta ever - INVINCIBLE. But this year I haven't got even ONE slug hole in 400 hosta. I think it's the pine needles. Have 'Deadline' at the ready but so far haven't had to use it.

This year it seems to be my Stripteases. I divided one now I have three in three different locations that look like Swiss cheese.

Silly question, but where do you get the pine needles in mass amounts?

Some garden centers, especially in the south, sell them by the bail like we get straw or hay.

ditto on the pine straw, that, with some nice dry weather seems to have kept slugs under control for me this year.
my hosta 'geisha' was completely devoured by this time last year. this year not a blemish on it.

Frank that's not slug damage start looking for cutworms.

On that thick leaf and with those long chew holes I'd start looking for the cut worms in the petiols and aroung the base of the plant.
