Comparing Different Hydroponic Systems

Hi,

I have been growing a year round tomato garden in my south facing window for the past year and a half. I've been using soil and "tomato food" in 5 gallon buckets.

All my problems seem to be water related and I have decided to go hydroponic to ease the regular watering schedule and improve my yields.

I have been looking into different configurations and setups, and the setup that looks easiest in my location would be the flood/drain system. But I haven't been able to find any discussion of what type of setup is best, or the comparitive advantages or dissadvatages of different rigs. Is the flood/drain systems good? How many times an hour (day?) should I flood and drain?

What rig gives the best yeild generally?

On a flood & drain the pump should remain on for about 15 - 30 minutes. This should be done 4-8 times daily depending on the plant size, evaporation rates, & the media used. The entire flood & drain cycle should not be more than Â½ hour or root damage can occur.

I don't know which system produces the best yield. A commercial tomato grower in a desert near me uses NFT for their tomatoes.

If you changed your current way of growing to make things easier I think a drip system would be best. I like the ebb & flo and I have had great success with many plants. I know that bigger roots make better yeilds and you can have better root systems with the drip.

I never like to waste money buying new things. I use whatever is free except lines, pumps, fittings, etc. I noticed that you will have a bunch of five gallon buckets left when you switch to Hydro. Why not use the buckets you already have.

You would have to make sure the buckets drain into a reservior with a pump if you want to recycle your nutrient solution. If you drain to waste then ignore the last sentance and the next one. To recycle let the solution collect in one reservoir and get pumped through drippers which go into the buckets to feed them again.

You will need a submersible pump and a reservior and also irrigation lines and all the required parts for irrigation lines(post pump filter,drip heads, drip stakes, pressure reulators). The materials needed for drip is pretty cheap(Look around on the net for the best price and better quality)

If your window is not too low you could build a small table with a slight slope with trim peices as a "wall" on three sides with a vinyl sheet attached on top(4'x8' available at hardware stores). The side that is sloping down without trim is the drain side. Put your reservior under the drain end(try not to let light in the reservior because algea grows in light). Your reservior would have a pump which pumps solution in the buckets. The buckets drain to the reservior and this repeats.

If your mix is course then you must drip constantly. If it retains more water put a timer which takes them through the wet and dry cycle. The best mix I recommend is some kiln cooked clay balls (rocks) which are sold in hydro stores (I can't say the brand name). And also some Coco fiber, you mix the rocks and fiber with more rock than coco in the mix.

I think this mix drains very well and the coco holds some moisture in the mix. If the right proportions are used in the mix you can set your pump low to drip constantly.

Talk about a huge root system your tomato plants would be very healthy. This mix uses some coco which is more similar to soil and in my opinion that makes it easier to grow.

To tommilak, I am a ticketed, licensed plumber and I believe you should get away from plastics AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. PVC, CPVC, and PEX are chlorinated poly vinyl. They will leech at the start and then rinse out o.k however after exposure to U.V light (grow lights) they will start to break down. Check your solder and make sure that it is lead free (by law) use as little flux as possible but FLUSH your system for at least a week. I use a strong lemon juice concentrate (acidic) and let it run for a week. As for copper leeching, copper is used by the body and is a natural element. Your nutrient mix contains copper! One thing I discovered on one of my first systems was hydro static electricity. Moving water will generate a tiny, tiny amount of an electrical charge. Quick fix, bare copper wire wrap it around your copper somewhere and ground it, the copper on copper contact will remove the charge. Copper is a little pricy, get to know your scrap yard guy or local dump person, with some beer and a little luck, you can get scrap that is easy to clean and re-use. My first system is 4 years old and still going strong, I notice no difference in taste or texture of my fruits and veg. Good Luck!

Daniel, In case you're interested, my system is passive: Link. I also have some ideas for passively maintaining ppm that I haven't had a chance to try yet. Picture a tank with a constant osmotic pressure, maintained as such by the presence of a high-molecular-weight, poorly biodegradable solute (there are many options). Connected to the tank is dialysis tubing inside your grow bins. The minerals in the grow tank can pass through the tubing, but the high molecular weight solute cannot. Osmotic pressure should ensure that most of the salts remain within their respective grow bins, and that they're diluted to the same osmotic pressure as your solute tank. Thus, so long as the water level in the solute tank remains constant, so should the ppm of your grow bins. You can maintain the water level of your solute tank with a float valve -- the same type that you find in a toilet. Again, I haven't tried it, but I can't see a reason why it wouldn't work. Likewise, you could add nutrients passively. As your plants absorb their mineral salts, the amount of water needed to maintain a constant ppm will drop -- i.e., the water level will drop. So a second float valve, this time in the plant grow bins, could be used to add more nutrient solution. The one thing that this wouldn't take care of is the ratios between different nutrients, which can change over time, depending on what your plants are hungry for. I've thought of several ways to take care of this automatically, but they're anything but simple or cheap, and generally involve reverse osmosis and/or ion-selective membranes and/or automated nutrient testing systems.

Getting people to do Manual Js in general is hard. And people do not understand tight homes either. Friend of mine does foam insulation and he's seen it. Don't let them guess or oversize. He got a "I should have listened to you" e-mail from a customer whose HVAC dealer oversized.

Augie What size and efficiency systems both up and down do you have now-cooling and heating? Any specific issues with existing systems? I will assume you have conventional furnaces now. If you replace only outside condenser and inside evap coil and pair with existing furnace, you are just as well off staying with basic 13 SEER condensers. If you want higher SEER 15+, you must go with either two stage var speed furnace or at very least a single stage furnace model with high eff x-13 blower. I also question the sizing of the furnaces you were quoted. I will give a pass to the dealers on furnace models because these Trane furnaces whether down flow or upflow are adaptable to horizontal application which I suspect is what you have now. In other words, not a big deal. I do take exception to Mike's statement above about a two stage furnace running on low stage 90% of the time. Not true unless you have a true two stage thermostat. In fact if you use the timer on the furnace, you would be running probably 90% of time in high stage. A pet peeve of mine what dealers do to homeowners in this area. And yes a two stage stat costs more but will easily pay for itself. At this moment AHRI site is down. I will look up a system using both two stage furnace XV80 and single stage high eff blower XT80 for upstairs. I also recommend a pleated filter media cabinet that Mike suggested.
