So excited, but sad at the same time.

There is a small hosta nursery in upper Wisconsin that is officially closing up for business after next weekend due to the fact that the owner can no longer keep up with her gardens. She had closed up the nursery a couple of years ago, but still had a sale once a year. This year she said this was her final sale. I am very sad, and hoping that I can at least visit her gardens in the future. I will take pictures when I am there next weekend and post them on here. She has beautiful hosta gardens.

She just emailed me to tell me that she had set some hosta aside just for me, since she knew I would appreciate them. Now I can't wait to get there next weekend and find out what surprises are waiting for me. I knew all of you could appreciate my excitement, as I know my husband will give me a look like I am crazy. Is it next weekend yet?

Wow, that is fantastic! You are one lucky hosta addict. You go girl, and post photos of all your beauties when you get back.

Deer are common here, even in heavily trafficked suburbs. I haven't heard of any cougars/pumas/mountain lions in my immediate area, but they have been reported just 20 miles away, which is still thick suburbia. A couple weeks ago, all traffic stopped (4 lane divided highway) so a doe and her twin fawns could cross from a wooded hill to a small (10 acre?) park which contains a stream. We have a fox (vixen?) which twice a day crosses our backyard, south to north, possibly to a big stream and then returning north to south, possibly to an area of wooded ravines. She chases any squirrel on the lawn... that delights me and makes DH grumble.

Well, bluebirds are funny. Even though we build them "perfect" boxes, they will nest in strange places, and I think we all wish we could get inside their heads sometimes! Some people will either put out mealworms, sprinkle nesting material around the base of the box (usually pine needles), or even put a blue ribbon on the top (take down when bluebirds come, as it reminds the male of the wing-wave of another bird). However, despite best-laid plans, nature has a way of forging its own path. I saw a similar situation with tree swallows last summer - they chose a cheap decorative birdhouse with holes on both sides, totally odd size and layout to the house, hanging unsteadily on a branch. They built a nest and I believe had eggs, but later abandoned it (too many children around). I can still peek in and see the nest/feathers because there's no way to open it! I can only imagine how discouraging it is that your blues aren't nesting in your box, but look on the bright side: you can still see them coming and going, and since bluebirds often come back to the same vicinity next year (or even for their next brood) perhaps you can entice them to your box with some yummy mealworms. :) Best of luck!

Polly - There's a local thrift store near us where the money goes to missions. That's where all our stuff goes. Most times the large items that aren't in bags people want before they're even unloaded right! My last trip I took two of those video rockers chairs in great shape and an old school desk (which I'm now kicking myself for getting rid of!) The people there are super nice. That's a good idea to sleep in the room before hand. I do need to get some type of blinds, I wouldn't want to sleep with nothing on the windows. I don't have any pillows so that's on my list. Also need to get over the door towel hangers for the bathroom. No, I don't wash towels with every shower - they don't either so it's ok. :) I do have extra bedding and night stands so that's a plus. I just realized I don't have that many days off to do all this stuff. I need to get my butt in gear! Thanks for all the warm wishes!

I'm so glad you can 'camp out' in a nice place. Our new house wasn't completed in time, despite an extended closing on our home. We endured a 2BR furnished rental for a couple of months -- with one BR full of boxes. We donated most of our furniture to a friend's church for their annual upscale rummage sale. Volunteers took our stuff. We took a tax deduction. Our 'starter house' (of 30 years) had served us well. Memories are internal, and we have pictures! We built only 15 miles farther out of the city, having decided to stay near our 'roots' for nine months of the year and solve the winter weather problem by going to Maui. We remain *delighted* with our home. I'm sure you will be glad you made YOUR move!

Jen, I am sad to hear that - I hope it isn't because she is ill. Her garden is beautiful and so peaceful, but it surely would be a lot to maintain.

Janet, Last time I was there her mother had moved in with her. So I'm thinking things just were too hard to keep up with anymore.

Janet, she said she just wants to enjoy gardening, and garden only for herself again. Plus she is really into kayaking, and the nursery was just taking up too much of the time when she could be out.

Not the best, but I've attempted to label them. The Azalea in the picture is Mandarin Lights, which is supposed to be hardy and not need acid like other Azaleas.
