My garden this June 2011

I garden in zone 5a, NY state. After hearing the Weather Channel reporting golf ball size hail 15 miles north from here and today quarter size hail potential of a storm approaching, I ran out and took a few pictures of my hosta gardens to have something to look at over winter. Here are half of those pictures. I have less than half an acre for home, lawn and gardens, have 150 different hostas (and over 50 different dwarf conifers).

Here is my Whirlwind, placed it on the north east corner of my house, which is the entrance to my garden, hope the whites do not become green fast.

A Francis Williams under a dogwood only getting late afternoon sun :

Common blues and aureomarginata with a Sum and Substance in back, all shaded by a large limbed-up juniper.

This can happen when lamiums and clumbines are not kept restricted, from left Antioch, Night Before Christmas and Hadspen Blue.

After the garden gate an Atlantis (in an iron hoop of old barrel), lower left stiletto and Lemon lime, upper left Queen of the Seas, to the right August Moon :

that is a supreme sea thunder ... which is extremely hard to grow .... right up there with GE ...

That Sea Thunder gets 2 hrs afternoon sun. With some I am lucky, a few others not at all.

I'm so envious of all these beautiful blooms! I'm sort of in a dead season now that the daffodils and alliums are long gone, and the Iris too is past. Only a few early daylilies are staring to open, but it will be a month before they and the tall phlox are in full bloom. Annual marigolds and geraniums and gerbera daisies in pots are my only flowers until then. I'll just have to get vicarious enjoyment from everyone else's photos until late July when I can post my own. Gardenweed, I love the golden Chinese globeflower and the dark purple (almost black) sweet William and the beautiful pink mountain laurel. Digging, that bright pink peony is simply gorgeous. I really need to figure out where to plant some peonies. I love them, esp the more intense pinks, and I believe peonies do well in colder climates so they should thrive here. Wispfox, such amazing foliage!! I guess I would share your concerns about the weight on the garage roof, but I would also hate to see that greenery, and the privacy it must afford, go. Pixie, I love your pot with the sunflower motif. It really makes your front step setting. Lschibley, your peaceful little nook with the garden bench beside the brick walkway leading to your porch is wonderful with or without anything blooming.

Hey Jasdip--got a name for that recipe? LOL! Also, what do we do with those 4 1-quart bags? Friday is Canada Day and this weekend we will be celebrating Independence Day here in the states. So there will be a lot of grills fired up, I imagine. Here's one of my favorite grill recipes. It's great for vegetarians but even if you aren't, you won't miss the meat. Grilled Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms 2/3 c. chopped plum tomatoes 1/4 c. (1 oz.) shredded mozzarella cheese 1 tsp. olive oil, divided (I use a little more) 1/2 tsp. finely chopped fresh or 1/8 tsp. dried rosemary 1/8 tsp. coarsely ground black pepper 1 clove garlic, crushed 4 (5 inch) portobello mushroom caps 1 Tbsp. lemon juice 2 tsp. low-sodium soy sauce Cooking spray 2 tsp. minced fresh parsley Combine the tomato, cheese, 1/2 tsp. oil, rosemary, pepper and garlic in a small bowl. Remove the brown gills and stem from the underside of mushroom caps using a spoon. Discard gills and stems. Combine 1/2 tsp. oil (I use 1 tsp.), lemon juice and soy sauce in a small bowl; brush over both sides of the mushroom caps. Place the mushrooms, stem side down, on a grill rack coated with cooking spray and grill for 5 minutes on each side or until soft. Fill each mushroom cap with 1/4 c. the tomato mixture. Cover and grill 3 minutes or until cheese is melted. Sprinkle with parsley. Serves 4. Time will vary depending on the size of the mushrooms.

Grilled Chicken Tacos 3 medium tomatoes, coarsely chopped 1/3 cup fresh lime juice 1 cup water 1 teaspoon salt 2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken thighs 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 teaspoon sweet paprika 1 teaspoon dried parsley 12 corn tortillas, warmed Shredded Monterey Jack cheese, jarred salsa verde and chopped avocados, onions, tomatoes and cilantro, for serving 1 In a blender, puree the tomatoes with the lime juice, water and salt. Transfer the puree to a large resealable plastic bag and add the chicken thighs. Seal the bag, pressing out the air. Refrigerate the chicken for 6 hours or overnight. 2 Light a grill or preheat a grill pan. Remove the chicken thighs from the marinade and pat them dry. Brush with the oil and sprinkle with the paprika and parsley. Grill over moderately high heat, turning occasionally, until the chicken is lightly charred and cooked through, about 15 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a work surface and let stand for 5 minutes. Cut the chicken thighs into strips and serve with the warmed tortillas, cheese, salsa verde, avocados, onions, tomatoes and cilantro.

tj, thanks for your observation. Checking this morning (nice rain now) there are two eyes which have half their leaves trying to do much more white border. Looking up the Hosta Library, this could be the progeny 'Ice Follies' developing. This would be a nice separate plant in the future.

I did not even realize that going on, because my eyes were overwhelmed by the lamium. I removed the lamium, and found pachysandria and weeds colonizing around and under the hostas under cover of the lamium. Now there are the hostas much better showing. Stalks of columbines will be cut back after they finished blooming.

Like you, I get through the long cold winters with my garden pics! LOL.

My Whirlwind, second year, is growing at a snails pace. Less than optimal growing conditions in full sun perhaps?

Your hostas are fabulous. Thanks for sharing pics.

kimcoco, my Whirlwind came as a 3-eye plant in a small pot last year, and I grew it in 2 hrs afternoon sun. It greened up fast then. This year I placed it on the north-east corner of the house. Now it gets much early morning sun, and nearly nothing after 11 am. I just transplanted it to its present spot when I redid conifers on that corner, it did not miss a beat.
