Comments (4)I wouldn’t plant until whatever is there is dead, so it might take a season of cardboard and mulch or careful glyphosate application (no spraying) followed by mulch. Groundcover really needs to start with a clean slate. Along the steps you could try either Iberis sempervirens or Veronica Georgia Blue, both flowering evergreen groundcovers, but neither they nor any other groundcover will outcompete already existing weeds. So plan on getting rid of weeds this season, and if in good shape by fall, plant then. All of my current panicled hydrangeas are in larger beds and are with large perennials or other good-sized shrubs, neither of which you have room for. I grow clematis into mine, but none of mine are floppy like VS since I deliberately avoid ones with that look. I don’t think clematis pulling branches down further would help....See Morewhat went wrong with my strawberry vanilla Sundae Hydrangea
Comments (3)It may still open more flower buds; they do not all open at the same time exactly. But that version of MG has waaaaay too much nitrogen in the fertilizer. That causes nice dark foliage and few or no blooms. I suggest instead mulching with an organic mulch 10cms deep, year around, and also using a cup (cup=0.3 liter?) of organic compost, composted manure or cottonseed meal but only once in Spring... until they become established. Once they have become established, quit fertilizing and let them feed off the decomposing mulch. Still, I would not worry about blooms on year 1. The plants should be working to produce a nice big root system in preparation for winter instead....See MoreVanilla Strawberry for the blooms but BOBO for the size?
Comments (35)@rouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a) , the blooms on your Tidbit are much larger than those on mine! I have three of them, all planted last fall, and they are strangely out of sync with eachother as far as their bloom time. Here are two of them, the first with blooms that are done and already browning, the other with blooms that are just starting. The second plant was the smallest last year, so perhaps it will catch up with the others next year....See MoreBungalowMonkeys
