Yet another ES question

I bought 4 endless sumer a couple of weeks ago. This is my first time growing hydrangeas. Transplanted it in their permanent homes which are the half barrels. They're growing beautifully and the buds are opening and blooming. Just thinking ahead...I'm in zone 7 but sometimes we can get real cold spells in the winter. Will they be OK above ground without protection? They're too big to drag anywhere. Will their being above ground kill the roots during cold snaps in winter? If I need to protect them, how should I go about it?
