The spots did start as black & faded to the brown, so maybe it is a sunburn! PHEW! That's a relief! This is my 3rd rescue orchid, by far the most healthy of the 3. The first 2 I attempted to save were damaged by being left out in the snow a few years back & Lowes sold them for dirt cheap, so I tried, but they were both too far gone to save. Frozen leaves & roots, when I repotted those 2, I had to take off probably 90% of the roots that were mushy & black, which is why I think they died on me. When I repotted this one, I only had to remove 3 dead roots & about 95% of the roots were green or white, nice & firm, so this one seems to be really healthy. I really want this one to work out! So far, it seems to be happy in its new brighter north window without any sunlight directly touching its leaves. I'm going to leave it there, continue with my normal care routine, & hope for the best. Guess maybe I'll quit misting the leaves & just mist the roots through the slots in the pot. Its an incandescent right? If so, then you probably made a mistake. I did that exact thing and ended up returning it as it does absolutely nothing to benefit the growth of your plants. It may say its a grow bulb, but if its incandescent, all it does is give off heat.

Unless your planning on growing full-size plants in your basement, lighting doesn't matter too much. For sprouting plants and growing seedlings, shop lights work fine. Up until last year, I grew all my seedlings with a ccombination of compact fluorescent lamp (previously used for construction) and an old joy-rigged fluorescent drafting lamp (previously used for architectural drawings). The price was right for both... Free. Only recently have I bought a new set of fluorescent fixtures - still not what anyone would call professional, but they use a lot less duct tape and are nicer on the eyes :)
