foliar feeding

I have been considering constructing a system that uses foliar feeding on the plants and giving the roots only water. I am wondering if it would make much difference if the automatic application of the weak nutrient solution should be to top and bottom of leaves, or does it matter. I am considering several options on the method of application. One idea would be to mount downward oriented spray heads on an overhead assembly. As an option, the nutrients could be applied from below, or from top and bottom. I think that I will try using washed gravel as the medium. I have seen some small diameter hose that has been perforated by laser. I am going to expirement with it to see if it might work as a linear mister. Your ideas on such a system? chuck
