Should I wait for Vanilla

I contacted several nurseries looking for VS with no luck, everyone is sold out. I contacted bailey nurseries the distributor of VS and they suggested I mail order from white flower farm. After doing some research I'm not sure this is a good idea. They seem pricey at $30 for a 1 gal not including shipping. Also there was a lot of negative feedback from disgruntled customers.

Why is VS so hard to find in local nurseries! I'm wondering if I should wait until next year maybe there will be more available when supply meets demand.

New introductions take a while to be mass produced. Since the inventory or supply of plants is small compared to the demand, prices for recently introduced shrubs are high. Once the supply of VS's increases, inventories and the availability of plants should improve. Once inventories increase a lot, prices should moderate. I remember when ES was selling for $30 something several years ago!

btw, be ready to wait more than one year if you want lower prices.

I've been interested in VS, too. I haven't seen it locally yet, but I haven't been really looking. As with any new plant, I prefer waiting until the plant's been out a couple of years to get a handle on what real gardeners are saying about it. I don't really mind paying $30 + shipping, but if the price is going to come down anyway, I think it's worth the wait of another year or so if you can.

I was one of the first around here to get QF (well, one of the first to post about it). I love the growth habit, and I love the flowers when they are white or fully blushed. I truly dislike them in August when they're in the ugly duckling stage. My beds are at their best in August. Had I known how homely it would look for that month, I don't think I'd have wasted my time on it. Live and learn. Now I wait.

If they're rootbound, by all means, go for it! If they aren't then you're welcome to change the soil and place in different, but same-sized pot. It just depends on what effort you have the time and desire for. Changing soil can help evict the possible pests. I like to water my plants before I repot/change soil and wet the new soil after the move. It kinda helps keep the roots in place and they're less brittle and sensitive. You don't have to do the pre-watering though.

well I let them go, but they didn't go, they are still right where i put them, on some pink and yellow lantana i did not even know i had growing in my yard! I found it today growing by the fence in the back yard, it's climbing around some kind of hyacinth weed i forgot the name of it. but it is in a good spot for them, sunny but not out in the open, i will check on them when i get home and I guess bring them in if they are still there, hopefully they will take off and have time to do what they are programmed to do, they are quite tame now, if i put my hand in ther cage, they crawl right on it, and sit, lol, and they have stopped protesting that much when i unroll their proboscis to put it in the sugar water!:-) say a prayer for them! they need all the help they can get at this point! thanks!

Should I wait to remodel until I'm back at work?

I think it depends on how available you'll be to stop in and check on things once the kids are back in school and you're back to work. If your fall schedule is such that you'll be out of the house and an hour away before the contractor gets there, and not home until after he's gone, I don't think I'd wait until fall. If it were me, I'd want to do it during the summer, while I'm around to keep an eye on things and make quick decisions when presented with them. But I'm a bit of a control freak. Also, I don't know the scope of your work, but it shouldn't be as noisy as, say, framing and roofing a new build. There will be noise with demo, and with whatever small amount of carpentry and drywall has to be done. The noisiest will likely be the tile saw, but you might be able to have that set up outside.

amodernmountainhome Thank you for your post. You bring up great points and you're write, had I waited to build I would have watched costs like I was investing in a stock. I believe our home will start in July which is interesting when you look at he futures. I cam across the same information yesterday about futures, didn't know they existed out months and months. I'm not sure what our bid is based on but even if lumber where to drop 50% not sure the cost of our home will decrease. The builder did say if cost of lumber does come down he will credit back the difference so he can sleep well at night. I trust the builder! I have been working with him for over a year now and believe what he says. I'm glad we made the decision to move ahead because it would have driven me nuts. I'm currently working on locking in our mortgage rate and working on the construction loan.

I'm not concerned with the price as I am with the reputation of white flower farm. I have several hydrangeas and I paid about $30 for each but they were in 3 gallon pots so I enjoyed lots of flowers right away.

My limelights have been in the ground for three years now and I really enjoy them, I thought a Vanilla Strawberry would be fantastic. I know it takes about five years for a hydrangea to reach full growth so the sooner the better.

So far I'm happy with my hydrangea choices........except I bought too many endless summers lol
