Hydrangea Limelight vs Oakleaf Snowqueen Hedge
Comments (2)Well they have very different requirements. The oakleafs going to like more shade and not tolerate full sun very well. The Limelight should do fine in full sun. They're also have two totally different growth habits, the oakleaf can be sort of wide and spreading, but the Limelight is going to be more upright like a crepe myrtle tree (you could always plant something under/around it. Keep in mind too as far as a hedge both of these are deciduous, and you'll have to leave the winter branches up to keep the buds in place for the next year (Does Limelight bloom on new wood?) But that's a long distance for any one hedge, maybe breaking it up in groupings back and forth. Maybe throwing in some other hydrangeas in for color....See MoreAnyone have Phantom? Any thoughts vs limelight?
Comments (1)It is one of the largest paniculatas so make room. It has large and nice blooms but the ones I saw had bare feet (few leaves in the bottom 2-3'). If this is normal, you may have to find a low growing part-shade bush to cover them, like one does with some roses....See MoreWow, sticker shock at H. p. 'Phantom'
Comments (7)Both my local Lowes and Home Depot has them for $40. I bought 2 and then laughed because my regular nursery has them for $180. Also our local Agway has many beautiful ones for $109 which is a bargain compared to the nursery. It's a shame bc the ones at the big box stores will be dead soon. Noone takes care of them properly. The plants were grown in CT which is where I am so that's a plus for the ones I did buy. I absolutely love mine. People stop me in my yard to ask what they are. They are GORGEOUS! Good luck!...See MoreDoes your Limelight or Little lamb hydrangea have buds in them?
Comments (23)When the flower buds open, they look like little broccoli heads. Since this is a newly planted hydrangea whose root system is not established yet and it was planted in the middle of the summer, it is hard to predict. Keep the soil as evenly moist as you can to a depth of 8". Water early in the mornings (6-8am) from the base outwards in all directions. Insert a finger in several watered spots after a while. If the soil feels dry, use more water. A staring amount might be 1.5 to 2 gallons per plant per watering. Maintain mulch 2-4" (but no rocks) in order to limit soil moisture loss. I would expect to see some wilting episodes but as long as the soil is evenly moist, they should appear perky in the morning. If not, there was not enough water so water them right away. If the broccoli heads or flowers begin to brown out, the plant is aborting the flower for lack of enough water, excessive temperatures, too much sunlight, very windy conditions, etc. If that happens, make sure you are watering enough, the plant has enough mulch and water when the soil feels dry at a depth of 4" (that is where hydrangea roots usually are). I use outside chairs, umbrellas, cardboard, etc to provide temporary respite from afternoon/evening sun in Year 1....See Moregreenhavenrdgarden
