planting from root division

I was given an Annabelle hydrangea from a root division (sounds like math!). I planted it but the next day all the stems and leaves had drooped and started to dry up. Is this normal? Should I cut them off? I prepared the soil with some compost and watered well... Anything else I should do/should have done? Will it survive?

Some of the roots that provide water may have been cut off or it may be located in a place where it gets either too much wind or sun. Any of those could contribute to leaf wilting. Think transplant shock. Mulch the plant well and maintain the soil soil, not wet. Consider a temporary wind block and/or sun block if the hydrangea is in a sunny/windy location. Do not fertilize. Some leaf loss is to be expected but let the plant tell you. Some form of root stimulator (medium strength of less) mixed with the next watering might prove useful. Half a capful of liquid seaweed with 1/2 gallon of water can be applied on the leaves as it is food that the leaves can absorb while the roots recover. Do this only when watering and discontinue after the plant has recouperated since watering the leaves promotes fungal leaf diseases.

It looks like that pot is pretty crowded. LOL You're going to have to take a look at what's going on down under. If you can get a piece(s) of the stem with roots you should be able to separate them successfully. Another option, would be to take cuttings. I would give you more plants, too. Gail

Well, it can be done, but would not be my first choice of methods for propagation. Not all clems will lend themselves to this treatment - you will need an established plant that has several healthy stems emerging from the root crown. And you will of course need to dig up the entire plant to divide it - removing an established clematis vine can be a lot of work and it will inevitably put the vine at some risk. If the top growth has been cut back and the soil washed away from the root ball, you should be able to separate the stems, allowing for an equal amount of roots for each stem section. I doubt I'd attempt more than a single division from each plant. Ideal time for dividing is just as the plant is coming out of dormancy and pushing new growth. Layering may take some time, but it is far easier and poses no risk to the mother plant.

Thanks Ken, Here is some more info: The three varieties are: Halcyon http://www.thehostafarm.com/html/halcyon.html Regal Splendor http://www.thehostafarm.com/html/regal-splendor.html Krossa Regal http://www.thehostafarm.com/html/krossa-regal.html I purchased them from the Hosta Farm They were soaked for about 3 hours, and were definitely more hydrated when I received them. Halcyon and Regal Splendor were already putting up small leaves. Krossa Regal and 3 - 4 eyes each I believe I planted them at the proper depth - two times as wide and deep as the root ball, and roots splayed over a hill of dirt in the bottom. Watered in well, and surrounding soil mulched over with compost. Bed gets early morning light - about 2 - 3 hours worth (when Seattle allows) and then is partial sun - completely shady through the day.

Would this be unwise? -root division of rubber plant

Are we talking about Ficus spp or Eucommia or? in any case IF there are seporate root systems then there should be no problem & mess if divided.
