Bare Root Division Planted...

I was brave and decided to plant bare root divisions.

I feel good about the prep I did of the garden bed, and just planted 12 bare root divisions.

How long can I expect to wait for the divisions to leaf out?

How full can I expect these divisions to leaf out this first year?

w/o names.. its hard to be precise... as to how they will do their first year ....

but where did you get dormant plants.. this time of year????

they should leaf out.. when they rehydrate enough.. to start growing.. how long that takes in your garden.. i do not know ...

did you plant them at the proper depth ???

how did the pips look ....

i fear this is bigboxstore stock..

Thanks Ken, Here is some more info:

The three varieties are:

Halcyon

Regal Splendor

Krossa Regal

I purchased them from the Hosta Farm

They were soaked for about 3 hours, and were definitely more hydrated when I received them.

Halcyon and Regal Splendor were already putting up small leaves.

Krossa Regal and 3 - 4 eyes each

I believe I planted them at the proper depth - two times as wide and deep as the root ball, and roots splayed over a hill of dirt in the bottom.

Watered in well, and surrounding soil mulched over with compost.

Bed gets early morning light - about 2 - 3 hours worth (when Seattle allows) and then is partial sun - completely shady through the day.

I have no idea about the pics, though blog.com has a reputation for a lot of down-time. Thanks for letting me know! If you click again another time, hopefully it will work better. Hard to complain much about a free thingie, so I won't. Sorry it frustrated you! The pics here are of a diff plant, but the very same principle. " I am wondering if there's a way to have loose airy soil that that also have enough nutrients without frequent fertilizing." Generally yes, a bigger pot/more volume of soil mix. I would forego the styro & compost. The styro will just cause you to need to water (and repot) more often. Fertilizer is much more efficient at delivering nutrients in a pot which is not a large enough environment for the natural decomposition process to appropriately sustain/fortify plants. Also, as decomposition happens, the result is tiny, water-logged, airless particles (mud.) More about soil/watering. A Dracaena grows so slowly, an occasional dose of weak fertilizer should be more than enough even in the leanest (nutritionally) mix. The mix you described, or any with 30% compost would be too dense for my confidence. The goal of a coarser, grittier mix is to eliminate tiny particles of any type, peat, sand, clay, silt. Think moist particles that have some tiny air spaces between them so there is also oxygen, even when saturated to capacity. It's going way beyond my area of experience to give you a specific recipe since I break the rules I espouse but there are a glut of discussion here about this. I would follow the advice established in those. It gets perpetuated because it works well for so many people/plants. There is a pic of such a mix here, in post dated Wed, Oct 20, 10 at 9:45.

Dan, I don't think the authors are recommending doing away with container-grown stock. I think they are saying that bare-rooting, as part of the planting process and done by people trained in doing it, has advantages (and disadvantages). They are going through the process to correct root problems caused by traditional growing methods, not to prevent the problems from occurring to start with. Also, I think most of the research and debate is concentrated on larger stock (mostly B&B), rather than smaller, containerized stock. The guy that brought this article back to my attention claims to be a totally supporter of bare-rooting smaller stuff, but has concerns about calls for doing it across the board for different species, to larger B&B material, and by the nursery industry with untrained labor.

I think there is some good advice here. I would put them straight in the ground. The reasoning is this: Plant them right away. If you can't plant them right away, keep them in either a protected, shaded outdoor location (preferred), or in the fridge. You are receiving roots that have been in dormancy, and which have been stored by the distributor in the perfect temperature and humidity. Warmth will break that dormancy, and you don't want that too happen too early. They should stay on the cool side until you get them in the ground, so don't leave them in the house. Secondly, the biggest reason for failure is lack of moisture. (that's why the fridge is not your best option--they'll dry out too much). Soaking them in water before planting is a good idea. But even better is getting them in the ground as soon as possible. There, they will have the proper temperature, proper moisture, and can slowly "wake up" as your growing season starts.

with my near beach sand .... i HAVE TO remove potting media ... and plant in native soil ... ergo ... i would bare root a potted plant ... when moving a plant just across the yard.. there would be no reason to bare root ... and here is the important part .... IF I CAN LIFT THE CLUMP ... AND HOIK IT AROUND THE YARD ... without hurting myself.. or my bert.. if i had one.. lol ... so.. perhaps you are mixing potting info.. with in ground plants ... ken btw: dig the new hole first ... approximately ... so you can dig the plant.. and just hurl it into the new hole... when you are to tired to dig the next new hole.. you know its time to not dig another hosta.. lol ... ps: btw ... with the sand ... its near impossible to dig a ball of soil... it all falls off by itself ... so whether i want to bare root it or not... it kinda does anyway ... except on a huge old clump .. where all the roots hold it there ... this was a problem with moving conifers... and trees ...

They'll leaf out in a few days. I don't remember for sure, as it's been a while since I got bare rooted plants, but It doesn't take long.

All of my hosta arrive bare root, and as the season progresses, new arrivals are more leafed out than the ones arriving in early spring.

It won't take long at all for them to respond to your care. I'd expect to see new growth within a week. The temporary wilting of the first day or so can be remedied by applying loosely a low tack masking tape to help keep the stems (petioles) vertical. I'd also try to keep them from any HOT sun, but if you plant with only a couple of hours morning light, they'll be fine. Just water them regularly.

After you water them in, check again to make sure the crown is not set in the ground too low. That will rot them quicker than anything.
