Bees keeping hummers away from feeders?

I can't believe the number of bees I have, drinking the syrup I put out for the hummers. I've never seen so many. And I even have feeders that are all red, with no yellow.
The hummers are also scarce now......just a few stopping by. It could be just the time of year for them to migrate. But I was wondering........do bees scare the hummers away from the feeders? Sometimes I see the hummers on the feeder early in the morning, before the bees are up.

Cath, yes, I believe bees do deter hummers from feeding, or at least wasps do. This summer saw many times a hummer stop to drink, then fly away as a wasp rose up.

And yes, they are definitely leaving. I have only one right now, there is no chasing at all. A week ago I had two, and before that had 8 or more. We are getting a low of 35F tonight, so I hope he leaves soon.

Hummers are very visible at feeders early in the morning and at dusk, topping up for the night and after it.

There was someone else (or was it you?) who had a big bee problem earlier this summer. You might want to check that post out for suggestions.

As the days get colder, I find they are too cold for the biggests bees, and on cold days only the littlest bees are active. So your problem will ameliorate as the days cool off.

My only suggestion would be to plant a bee heaven like agastache nearby to lure them away.

Are they honey bees or yellow jackets? We have problems with yellow jackets this time of year but during the spring we had a 'swarm' of bees for at least a week. They eventually left but we found if we put out a weaker mix of nectar the bees lost interest.
This time of year we use the bee guards to keep the yellow jackets out of the feeders. The guards also prevents the surprise of YJ's popping out of the tubes when the Hummers go to feed! :)
You might try adding 1-2 more feeders.........make a stronger nectar mix for the bees in one feeder and hang two extra feeders elsewhere in the yard, filled with a regular mix for the Hummers
We have Anna's Hummingbirds year round so we have no fewer than 6-8 feeders to tend to. Come this winter we'll probably have 30 hummers to feed.

The bees are thirsty. You can't keep them away. Your only option would be to provide several alternate water supplies for the birds. Even pottery or plastic plant saucers, laying on the ground, are something that birds will come to readily. They can be placed in among your plants, but close to a hose for daily rinsing and filling.

you might try animal repellent granules at the base of the tree the scent is very offensive to them if necessary you could also attach maybe a bird feeder made for the ground and put some in there too further up the tree YOU have a RIGHT to feel about your yard and birds etc any way you choose its NOT ur ignorance thats highlighted when someone ELSES attempts to shame or guilt you the granules and spray are sold by walmart

I never had much luck with drip feeders, but I had a rather assorted mix of the bottom reservoir type for years and switching from one to another never seemed to bother the hummers. And they really were different: Some had perches and others didn't, some had bee guards and others didn't. Sometimes I moved them a few feet or many, and that didn't seem to bother them. Just to go out on a limb though, take a look at the new feeders to make sure the openings aren't blocked off or rough. Consider whether there are any other changes around the feeders (tall weeds, growing shrubs, increased human activity, noise, etc). Is it possible that sunlight is reflecting from the new feeders in disturbing ways? I would even clean them thoroughly, rinse them with vinegar, and rinse with distilled water a few times (just in case there is something in the reserviors). When everything else seems right, look for odd stuff. Hope your hummers adapt to te new feeders quickly!

Same thing happened to me once, and I felt awful and took it down. You can buy them now with bee guards on them. Try a birding store, and you'll be more likely to find one of those. Take it down, and put some orange halves and jelly out for the orioles, until you find a feeder with a bee guard.

The hummers are pretty cautious, but they seem to get used to having bees around. In my experience it does inhibit their feeding somewhat, but they seem to stay pretty determined:
