I can't be the only one not done yet
Comments (33)I've got the double whammy here. We got this prematurely frigid winter weather like a lot of you guys, plus I gimped up my ankle last week. I'm waiting for it to heal and the swelling to go down but it doesn't seem to be getting better, its been over a week now. I must have really strained it with all that back and forth walking around I frantically did in the garden before the front hit, savoring the last few days and digging up that Flame Acanthus didn't help. I also broke the shovel trying to get it out. The arctic front killed stuff back and now there's piles of green leaves everywhere along with fallen branches but there's plenty of dead looking green leaves still up in the trees so its just the beginning of the leaves. I guess its good that its so cold which helps force me to stay inside like a good patient and off the ankle. I look out the window and it appears overwhelmingly depressing looking out there at the moment, like a disaster in fact. Today is sunny and 50 degrees and I'm dying to get out there to start cleaning up the mess but I don't dare. I guess I will get it cleaned up finally but usually I do it in stages. I'm kind of pitted with this weather and the rest of it....See Morehelp please. GC is one of those 'old dogs'
Comments (12)Kerdi is great, but it is perfectly possible to make a properly waterproof shower without Kerdi. If you're GC can find a plumber that has experience with Kerdi that's fine, but I would be far more worried about someone trying something they had never done before and screwing up (unintentionally or semi-intentionally out of frustration..."See I told you it wouldn't work syndrome") than a good contractor making a good shower in a correct and time proven manner. So make sure that the plumber who does the job knows how to do it right with Kerdi or use this forum and other resources to learn about how a shower should be done properly the "old fashioned" way and have them do that. The only other alternative I can think of would be to find and hire your own plumber to do the Kerdi, but that opens the door for finger pointing. - Jim...See MoreI can't be the only one
Comments (11)Thank you so much, Susan, Socks, Lynn and Laser. You are very wise and compassionate folks and your responses have brought about a true healing effect. I'm not as angry now as before, nor puzzled, and have bypassed "how could they." They are merely lazy and totally self-absorbed. I will soon and decline the invitation, as I'm convinced it was perfunctory. I've come a long way since last September 4 and no longer permit anyone treat me undkindly. They may attempt it but I don't have to stick around for the abuse. I hope DH can see me as I continue to grow and stretch and expand my interests and abilities. He would be amazed and proud, and I feel really good about myself. It's been a few months since my last meltdown so I'm hopeful of making it through this holiday weekend in one piece. All my efforts now go into meeting new people, making friends, and enjoying my hobbies. And I have the time to invest in things I've always wanted to do, like volunteer, as well as seizing the myriad opportunities before me to do anything I want. Again, my profound thanks to all of you. I feel healthy again. Kaye...See MoreExhaust Vents - I Can't Be The Only One....
Comments (12)All the volume of air that the hood vents outside must enter the house from somewhere. In older homes, some of it will come from poor sealing around doors and windows. The rest will be pulled into the house from other openings, and these openings are usually the vents on gas-fired (and oil-fired) equipment (furnace, water heater, clothes dryer, etc). If enough MUA is needed, it can actually reverse the flow of the flue gas leaving the appliance and essentially bring the fumes into the house ("backdrafting"). Obviously, this is a very dangerous situation due to CO concerns. In newer highly-sealed homes this is an even greater problem. Every house and vent setup is different so it has to be handled on an individual basis. One way is to run the vent with all windows and doors closed and check the airflow at all gas appliance vents to ensure there is no backdrafting. Any MUA system will bring in outside air, which will be cold in winter and hot in summer. In some cases, a heat exchanger could be used to save energy costs. There is no easy or cheap answer if you find you need MUA. You can't count on always remembering to open a window when you run the vent. It really needs to be a foolproof system such as an automatic vent to let in MUA as needed. Steve...See Moresandpointgal
