cool rainy day - good for pics

Hi all,

Here are a few pics of my happy hostas - I got 4 new ones last weekend and split 3 of 4 into 2 pieces each so I could use them in multiple places. My hubby insisted on buying me "Praying Hands" because he liked how different it looks. Oh, it's different alright :) Others were Mt. Tom, Spritzer and Sunshine Glory. Anyway, on to the pics... for some reason they are not displaying the names that I labeled them. Grrr.

Very impressive clumps. But you've got to name these. Just add a post of the Hosta in picture #1, 2, etc. How old are these beauties?

Let's try this:

1= june potted on deck
2=assorted minis collection
3=Guardian Angel and NOID
4=Northern Halo - positively glows in the garden - my favorite in spring
5= Sum and Substance in elevated planter, Frances Williams, Great Expectations, Time Tunnel
6= different view of GE, Time Tunnel and Lady Isobel Barnett (my hugest hosta) taking up the whole corner
7=Jade Cascade
8= Old Glory, Sagae, Blue Angel
9= June, NOID, Liberty, Grand Marquee, August Moon (all were divisions form other parts of the yard)
10= Wolverine (I think), Squash Casserole, Orange Marmalade
11= Elegans
12= Stained Glass and clematis
13= Paul's Glory, Patriot, Halcyon (or Hadspen Blue), Whirlwind

Melati, Thanks for the pics. Your Hostas are certainly well grown. Lime Smoothie is spectacular. BTW, that doesn't look like Band of Gold to me, unless perhaps it's a streaked version of it. Are you joining the Maine HS this weekend on the trip to Mass? If so I may see you on Sunday. Steve

Oh, Wow! You all really are making me go out and look again at what I have and wonder what you are seeing!!! I don't think I have any more special a place than you ALL do, as well!!I look at your pics. (which I LOVE LOVE LOVE to do) and I know I you can't be more in awe than I am over what you've done with your own hosta and gardens!!!! Seriously, I only have about 1/3 of a half-acre that I work with hosta plantings so it may look like I have more but I do not!! They are packed in to this small place, believe me!! Maybe it's the camera angle-shots--maybe that's it!!! Whatever it is, I am SO GLAD you are thinking so kindly of what I've presented. It's easy to make a small square look better than it is, when you block out the whole!! LOL Again, thank you guys and gals--your words warm my heart and make me appreciate even more what I take so much joy in doing!!! :o)

Love your Othello!!! I think that The Hunter is a hardy rose that can survive zone 3 winters. So I'm thinking the rose isn't all that full when he blooms open. Am I right? Thanks! Carol

lpink: DON'T DO IT!!! The "cherries" were supposed to taste like black cherries............they don't. They are bitter, astringent little suckers with large pits. You can't pit them like regular cherries, they're more like olives. They are invasive. The roots creep underground a pop up a short distance away creating another plant. I did order them online. If you just wanted a hedge and food for the birds, I guess they'd be OK, but if space is at a premium, I wouldn't recommend them. They produced sporadically. One year not much, next year loaded. I am tearing out all six bushes....with NO hard feelings! (grin) Deanna

Stunning! Makes me really appreciate the beauty of a mature hosta (mine are all babies). Plus, I didn't know that bleeding hearts got that tall. Wow.

I think the fencing is to keep Les and his knife away from the Hostas. No doubt it will trip him up.

Very beautiful!! I love your choices on companion plants. While hostas are my favorite, I think they are best displayed with other plants, rather than just a sea of hostas. Lovely!

I just love potted hosta, they are definitely my favorite, but I always worry they will freeze over in our area and die. We get pretty cold up here.

I would love to be able to mature some in containers. As it is I buy a few each year to grow in my planters then I plant them in the ground in late summer.

How cold does it get where you are?

Love the way you have different kinds of garden art around, including the blue birdbath, the dog head on a stepping stone, the comic dog tag, the little fairy reading a book.

I'm guessing here, but I bet you have the fencing because of your pets? Like dogs? Does it work to keep them out? Or is it so you can define the beds when there is snow on the ground?

The fencing is to keep the dogs out! We have a 183 lb Great Dane, an 80 lb English Labrador and a 73 lb Rhodesian Ridgeback/Whippet mix. They are very respectful when the fence is up, but if I take it down for a day, they start trampling everything... I put it up in early spring and don't take it down until frost kills everything.

Beautiful Gardens and well grown Hosta. I espectially like the Time Tunnel. I have never seen this hosta before. Very nice!

The Dark One becons again. What is the variegated one in Pic 11 with Elegans? It looks like it needs to be rescued from the grips of the foundation.

The cast is gone so I can be a little sneakier, like Mack.

The green and white with Elegans is your run of the mill variegated hosta. It was here when we moved in... The only type of hosta that was here 6 yrs ago. I have not had the heart to replace them with something more interesting yet, since they fill in the space nicely where they are. I have interpolated some lilies with those two and its a struggle for the lilies to get taller than the hosta leaves in spring. Elegans swallowed one lily this year so it had to move across into the big bed.

gabby, we are right over the MD line in PA and it usually gets into the teens for the coldest part of winter. Not this year of course!
