Hummingbird Garden

I saw a hummer today! (please look)

Hi I saw a hummingbird today in the garden, also one in the yard and at the birdbath. There was one on the humingbird feeder, some in my plants and in the rose garden. I think I may even have seen one on my lawn. I know I saw one over my pond!

I also recieved a friendly reminder that the "thread removal" thread was not an on topic discussion. This is! LOL

Lorna, I plant flowers the hummingbirds like on purpose when I see on the tag they like them, but then don't really expect to see them. Now that I saw one, I am encouraged to plant more plants they like. Cameron, our night temps have been in the 40s and 50s for a few weeks, so maybe the one I saw was one of the stragglers, and the rest have flown on. I just bought a book on attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. It was an Ortho book, and I almost didn't buy it, because I didn't want to support a company that makes poison, but then decided that the book looked good, and I should support them for selling an animal friendly publication. I'll have to learn more about their habits and migration. Anne, I'll have to check out the "Hot Lips" salvia. I almost bought some kind of red when I bought the black and blue, and now wish I had. Well, there's always next year. I haven't seen any more hummingbirds, even though I'm on the lookout for them. Do you all put out feeders? We have one, but don't put anything in it. Maybe we should. I'll have to see what my book says about that, too. Sue

Sass - Where are you in Lakeland? I live here too and seeing an Allen's is very rare. I don't know if you know Joe M who lives in Christina but he had one a couple winters ago. Our area usually gets hummers starting around now as migrants and then those that come in Jan. or so stay through till about April. A few of us here in Lakeland have had banders come and band and id the birds as part of a 10 year study to see where they migrate to in the summer. If you are interested, please let me know and I can get in touch with one of them. Rufous are similiar to Allens, and friend and I both had one last winter. Please contact me through GW. I also posted about recording sightings through Audubon. I am not doubting your id of your bird, just really excited cause I know it is unsual for them to be here. I know it is something that should be documented. Congrats on your hummers!

Cool, I'm going to have to investigate this plant and see if it will fit into my garden space...how large was this plant? I am just now starting to see them at my (plastic and one other type feeders) it's so great to watch them. I'm sure that they will come to you too....I dont know if it was complete coincidence or not, but I had the same feeders out for a few weeks with the store bought RED STUFF in them...nothing!!! then I changed it out to the home made 4:1 sugar water combo...and THERE THEY WERE!!!

Lol - I'm still waiting to "bump into" (stalk?) someone from HGTV's "Crashers" Shows. Any one would do... Kitchen, yard, BATH, I'd totally follow them around the store, then look confused & exasperated with a dramatic flair... Of course with my face "paint & spackle" full-on & my hair brushed, even! (Of course, if I did see them - which I won't, since they don't come to Kansas-of-all-places - I would be my usual mess in paint-stained work clothes, not a lick of makeup & my hair in its usual ponytail. I'd run SO fast from any tv camera that I'd be in the parking lot without what I came for before you could say "greenboard"! Which is what I need to go get, now I'm wondering if I should get dolled-up first... Nah.

hahahahah I actually made this up and put many words in here that I thought would get underlined just to see if they would be! aaaaaawwww shame on me ! But I DO have lots of hummers! :)!

I am so happy for you that you have all those hummers! The only word underlined was rosegarden - some threads now are so wide you have to move back and forth to read them - the fall weather is coming, and all the lovely salvias will spring into bloom, and we will be able to watch the fall leaves fall - lol

Did you know that ruby throated hummers are green? Yes the same color of those words. Has anybody noticed that they are beginning to go away? Maybe they are seeing the error of thier ways, or maybe the ugly litle troll that paints them green is just napping! Anyway RT hummers are GREEN! LOL

That's funny...Ellery says the word in green is rosegarden...but I see plants in green. Is it different for different people, or does it change by day?
