Additional hummingbird garden pictures

These are actually pictures of my 2004 hummingbird garden. I have bee balm planted, torenia (clown flowers - the small blue flowers), obviously marigolds, a purple salvia and cherry profusion zinnias - a small, mildew resistent zinnia that the hummingbirds frequent throughout the day. The last picture is a closeup of that flower. They were so successful last year that I planted them again.

I will soon take pictures of THIS year's garden and send them in. As soon as I upgrade my camera I will hopefully be able to get some pictures of the hummingbirds.

In a previous post I mentioned that my husband Dave and our dog Lucy were sitting outside by the feeder. We were right beside the birdbath you can see in these pictures!

What beautiful beds! How do you keep the borders edged so perfectly and keep the grass from invading your beds?

What kind of help do you need? When the figs droop and get soft, they are ripe. Looks like a healthy tree.

Thank you! Regarding the agastache, I started it from a packet of seeds that were supposed to be Purple Pygmy, but it isn't. I'm thinking it's rupestris, Sunset Hyssop, but I'm not positive. I had quite a few seeds germinate, and some of the seedlings grew, but only two have grown into mature plants. The other one is in another bed. The lobelia are growing in a spot where water catches whenever we get a heavy rain, and they love it so much. The red has spread by seed all over, the blue was new last year, so hasn't spread as much, and the purple is sterile (I'm guessing, never had a seed pod on it with seeds inside). I'm being optimistic about this now that I know I'll have more space to expand this garden much bigger than it already is. When my boyfriend first told me the idea of the garage, I was not pleased. But now, I see potential. I just have lots of work ahead of me. :) Karen

Bronze fennel seems to be very good host plant for the black swallowtails. I had them lay eggs two years in a row on this. Raised some of them up in the house. My favorite hummingbird plants are Salvia lady in red, Monarda Jacob cline, Fuchsia gartenmeister, red petunia and million bells, zinnia, Mexican sunflower, canna lily, coral honeysuckle, agastache, Firecracker penstemon, and red cypress vine.

I spent some time over at my MIL's home this afternoon and observed this hummer some more. After reading the site about Anna's and Red Throated, I am not sure it is either one of those. I looked for any signs of white on the wings or tail and found none. Her neck and chest is mostly white with a few specks of brown and one larger spot of brown in the middle of her chest. When she stretched up to groom her body, I noticed a very pale orange (rust) color on her body next to her wings. The top of her body is a shiny emerald green. Another hummer came near her and hovered around for several seconds, went away and came back a few more times. He or she had some pale orange/rust on his or her body...a little closer to the base of the tail rather than the actual body. I don't know if this visiting hummer was the same specie or not. This visitor had green on it's back, but did not have any color on it's throat other than white.

How do I keep the beds so neat? I use an edger once a week whether I think it needs it or not. By cutting down along the edge, it cuts any roots that are spreading underground.

Also once a week, I look over the entire bed and use a Japanese hoe to remove any weeds that have come up. It only takes me about 30 minutes for each job - sometimes less.

When I am out cutting flowers, deadheading, etc. I also pull any weeds that I see at that time. Once I got into this routine, the flowerbeds were no longer a problem to maintain. I've learned this is the only way I can keep up with the beds when I am working.

Yes, Charlotte. Thanks! Guess I'm going to pull out the old edger. Using it once a week whether it needs it or not sounds like the key.

Beautiful! I love Profusion zinnias. Any zinnias for that matter. Especially 'Chippendale Daisy' which I have right now. I hope "my" hummers are using it. I wasn't sure if zinnias were used by them.

Your pictures alone would convince me to buy an edger! LOL
