I let two professionals take pictures, I was told I would get an email with pictures of the hummingbirds. I never got the email. With their equipment the pictures were angelic, so I just took a few. I was told that hummingbirds return year after year. Last year I retired it was my first time being there to see. I will be there again this year. I did not even know a white hummingbird was rare. I went to Lindas house and she got all excited, she came right over, both the ladies also came from Linda's house, with their professional cameras. Linda took pictures with her phone, maybe she will post them. I am the last house on a dead end street, and the property next door is owned by the state of Texas, no ones goes there. That is the reason I have so many hummingbirds, there were all diffrent kinds, I do not think anyone will have more hummingbirds than what will be on my street. The man two houses up is 87 yrs old and has been putting out feeders for years, he puts out 21, I only put out 9, so you can imagine, how many birds are there. I went thru 5 lbs of sugar a day. I made the nector just before I went to bed, then put it out at daylight. I have hugh oak trees, and the noise they made was as loud as sea gulls, its like no other sound. I think they all nested at night in my hugh oak trees and the trees on the states property.Linda and others in Rockport have hummingbird signs in their yards, giving permission to bird watchers to come into their yards to take pictures of hummingbirds. I do not have a sign, I had to put my dogs in the house, for those ladies to take their "money shots". They stayed for hours until it got dark. They will be suprised when they try to come back this year. Barbra

According to what I've read fledgling hummingbirds are basically adults. However, the article on the B-Cs did say that mama helps them out for for a few days after they fledge. About ten years ago I saw a pair of fledgling Ruby throated hummingbirds learning how to drink drops of water on leaves. It was hilarious to watch them, but it actually didn't take them long to figure it out. I've never had orioles around until I moved to New Mexico. They are somewhat assertive birds, seeming to have little fear of me. I sure hope they don't find these baby hummingbirds. Interestingly the hummingbird nest is built within four or five feet of two sparrow nests. They seem to be very tolerant of each other. I wonder if the hummer was seeking the protection of the sparrows, when she chose her nesting site? When I lived in Berkeley, I once heard a huge commotion in the front yard. I ran outside. Several other people responded to the racket. To our astonishment it was a mob of birds attacking a cat. A robin fledgling was on the ground. The cat was stalking it. The robin parents sounded an alarm and seveal other species of birds came to help protect the baby. There were three robins, two hummingbirds, a tohee, a mockingbird and a couple of scrub jays. They all were all screaming at the cat and taking turns diving on him, pecking him. The cat flattened himself to the ground, yowling in fright. The cat's owner picked him up and promised to keep him indoors for the next couple of days until the baby robin would have a chance to learn how to fly. Lorna

sara_in_philly - I read your other post on this forum. After observing this beautiful creature over these past two days, I can see why people are drawn to their beauty. I hope you will get some hummingbirds in your area very soon! I spent some time over at my MIL's home this afternoon and observed this hummer some more. After reading the site about Anna's and Red Throated, I am not sure it is either one of those. I looked for any signs of white on the wings or tail and found none. Her neck and chest is mostly white with a few specks of brown and one larger spot of brown in the middle of her chest. When she stretched up to groom her body, I noticed a very pale orange (rust) color on her body next to her wings. The top of her body is a shiny emerald green. Another hummer came near her and hovered around for several seconds, went away and came back a few more times. He or she had some pale orange/rust on his or her body...a little closer to the base of the tail rather than the actual body. I don't know if this visiting hummer was the same specie or not. This visitor had green on it's back, but did not have any color on it's throat other than white.

If it hatched three weeks ago, it should have already fledged. I have below a comprehensive list of AZ rehabbers. Please keep calling until someone gets back to you.
