will other birds scare off Hummers?

I hung my Humming bird feeder in the tree by the other feeders. Will the other birds scare off my Hummer?

No, but the male hummers can be quite territorial. They may bedevil the other birds!

I have a hummingbird feeder hanging from my kitchen window, and a chianti sunflower that I planted just below it finally became big enough to be near the feeder. I have a group of 50-60 Lesser Goldfinches that terrorize my sunflowers each day about 1:30pm, as they get out of the heat of the day (105-110 degrees is a bit toasty for the little guys! ) Well, the hummingbirds don't like the Goldfinches one bit, and they will sit and "guard" the feeder as though the goldfinches want anything to do with the feeder. Then, on occasion, the hummingbirds will swoop over the goldfinches, or hover in front of them, until they flap off. I saw that for the first time just a couple weeks ago - HILARIOUS!!! Yup, they'll go after ANY BIRD near their feeder.

I did order the alligator. Probably won't do any good. It's actually a 3-piece alligator that move "lifelike" in the pond. Kind of creepy actually. Will probably scare the grandkids more than the birds. My pond is not really big. There is a very small upper pond with no fish that flows into a short stream and the lower pond is not much larger, and similar shape, to a grand piano. It's right off my deck and patio. We've had it for 15+ years and never had a problem until we took down those trees. I am hoping that due to the small size of the pond the bird would not want to dive in with that floating object in there, even though it may not know what it is. A floating island probably would have served the purpose and would have been chepaer and not so scary. It's too early here to get plants due to cold weather. I will leave the net on for a few weeks and see if more plants and the alligator do the trick.

Thanks for the suggestion about coral honeysuckle. When I said trumpet vine I meant "cardinal climber" -- is that the same thing? I'll have to plant the cardinal climber away from the house then. Will it re-seed on its own and take over my garden in zone 6? Maybe it's cold enough up here that I don't have to worry about that. From what I can tell either of these will grow from seed direct sown outdoors. Is that right? Or is it better to buy a plant from the nursery? I'll be on the lookout for Salvia "Lady in Red" and "Coral Nymph." We've got a few nurseries around here with excellent selections (too much!). I'll look for 'Jacob's Cline' Monarda too. traffic (car/road/street) scare off birds?

I have wind chimes hung between my feeders on the eaves on the back of our house and they sit on top of them to guard their feeders. The noise doesn't bother them at all!! (They make enough noise themselves when they start chattering that they probably don't even hear the chimes!) We live far enough from the road that I don't know about traffic and how they feel about it. I would guess if it bothers them, they just won't feed in that area and would stick with places they feel comfortable.

CDs for scaring away birds?

At first I thought you were going to place speakers and were asking for musical advice on the best songs to scare away the birds! Our local Home Depot uses screeching bird sounds to scare off birds - I don't think that works! It sounds like the baking tin method. I bet it will work fine for a while, until the birds get used to it but it would be worth a shot if you have a bunch of extra CDs laying around. A row cover is probably your best bet though.

HAHAHA..maybe I should be more concern about losing my other birds HAHAHA I think I will put the humming bird feeder back near my house. I read in one of the post that some hummer aren't bothered by the wasp. I just don't understand why the little Hummer comes up to the feeder then takes off. The one day I was sitting on the deck and my little Hummer came so close to me I could hear the humming of his wings..I even heard his little chirping. He doesn't seem to be scared of humans. :)

I once saw a hummingbird fly into my dads garage and land on it while he was refilling it.Very neat!

Mt 3 pair of hummers came back this year for 3rd year, fought for feeders 2 weeks ago when cold in west MI and I haven't seen them since?

Also,this is the nesting season but it should be nearing an end,the hummers will start visiting the feeders more often soon,be patient beccy

Some red-headed sparrows drink from the ant cups on my feeders. When they are there, the hummers whirl away
