hummingbirds - when to put feeder?
Comments (3)Olya, it also depends on the individual hummers...and how much plant nectar they slurp up in one day. Sometimes, they will start out on the flowers then switch over to the feeders. I've had them feed at both plants and feeders many times. And you can control the feeders, by moving them slowly away from the flowerbeds (where they should be placed until they begin to be used) and closer to your observation area. You can eventually move them right up onto a porch or next to a window and have up close and personal viewing from inside the house! As to how long to keep them out, it used to be put them out in February (here in CENTRAL Florida) and take them down in early fall. But lately, more and more hummers are being spotted during the late fall and winter, so many gardeners and birdwatchers are leaving the feeders out all year long. I'm reading that they have gotten great results with extended viewing hours in many locations. I would suggest trying the traditional months, at least, and then deciding whether or not to continue offering food all winter, based on the results you have gotten. Good luck!! Comments (5)That is terrible! I would say, I guess, that you shouldn't put out any if you won't be around to maintain them later. I guess I think it'd maybe be slightly easier on them to first arrive and have to go elsewhere for food than to have been nesting with new little ones and then suddenly not have the food they expect... regardless, they'd have to go elsewhere, but I personally might try to go for the time when there are fewer new little ones, I guess. Impossible decision it is. If I were you, I'd be begging neighbors to take on the responsibility. :/...See Morewhen to put out my first feeder?
Comments (11)Hiya masondad! :-) Welcome! Just wanted to add something. I hang my feeders on the overhang of the house, but like you mentioned - they're kinda high to maintain. So, what I did was bought some of those neat ol "S" hooks (that are long) that you can buy at any birding store (or even from Lowes in the flower pot/accessory area). I have about 2 or 3 S hooks linked on each other to bring the level of the feeder down to my level so that I can easily hang it (plus easier to view at eye level). They're attached to one of those round thingies, sorry don't know the name, but it's a round metal with a screw at the end that you can just screw into the wood (the ones that you put hanging potted plants on). Hope you get your feeder up soon and have some visitors. You'll fall in love with them. Keep us posted and good luck! :-)...See More- 14 years ago
