Photo op in rose garden

My rose garden is beside the sidewalk. It is a high visability area. I've had many roses swiped so I've been trying to keep my eye on them from my 2nd floor office.

My cat alerted me to something going on...

Strangers posing and taking pictures with my roses!

I sure wish the roses looked better! I'm going to prune early this year...I'm thinking this weekend!

What a lovely compliment though! Congrats!

Sadly, I'm sure some of the people who stop and admire them also pick them. "Oh she won't miss just one!" Non-gardeners don't realize we wait and wait for our plants to bloom. When I lived in Baltimore I had someone cut ALL of my tulips - dozens of them. It all happened one night. When I left the house to go to work and saw what had happened I was devastated. There was a little note on the door that just said "Thank you!". I'm certain they had no idea they only bloomed once a year.

Happens to me also, mine set back from the street abt. 20 feet but people just walk across the grass and pull off blooms, by the time I can get out the door they are gone, I do have some folks will ask and I give them a bloom, a guy comes and knocks on the door if I am not out there and of course I say yes, always a red Don Juan for his lady...... sally

Ha! Looks like Amber beat me to the punch :) I was just about to post that Don Juan is an excellent red climbing rose for our hot Florida weather. I have two newer Don Juans growing in my backyard and they're doing great! The blooms are the most romantic dark red. Here's a photo of one I took a couple of days ago: Don Juan - Climbing Rose If you're open to a pink climber I also have Catherine Nelson and she grows extremely well and fast! Mr. Nelson of Nelsons Roses had this rose specifically created for his wife Catherine. Catherine Nelson - Climbing Rose As far as yellow climbing roses I don't have any personal experience with them firsthand but I've seen photos of "Sky's The Limit" and it appears to be a beautiful yellow climber. Sky's The Limit - Climbing Rose For the best of all 3 worlds you can also try a multi-color climber like any of these 3 and they put out an explosion of different colors: Jacob's Robe - Climbing Rose Joseph's Coat - Climbing Rose Pinata - Climbing Rose Regardless of which climbing rose you decide to go with, try your best to find a rose grown on Fortuniana rootstock. It's practically a requirement for longevity because of the nematodes found in our Florida soils that love to munch away on roots. Dr. Huey rootstock would be a second alternative if you can't find what you're looking for on Fortuniana rootstock. I buy most of my roses from Nelsons' Florida Roses and they are all 100% grown on Fortuniana rootstock. I've linked their site for you if you'd like to see photos of their extensive collection. His nursery is located in Apopka, about 25-30 minutes NW of Orlando. If Nelsons is too far for you they also sell Nelsons roses at Lukas Nursery in Oviedo. And if you happen to be in South Florida, CoolRoses.com is also a good source for Fortuniana roses. OH! Almost forgot, the roses at Leu Gardens should be in continuous bloom well into the Fall. Early Autumn is especially nice because the cooler weather really brings out the darker blooms :)

You really got some good shots! That spider has doubled in size since y'all were here. It's doing a great job catching the insects in my garden. I'm glad you made it to Tyler. I'm glad to see this post again, I hate to hear they are being killed, hopefully with more attention someone will put a stop to the killings. I'm in the Houston, TX area & have had them come to my bird feeders over the years but never more than one at a time. I often have Parakeets eating at my feeders, had several this summer - all birds are welcome to eat at my house... :-)

@strawchicago z5 So Royal Jubilee is an amazing rose bush because it blooms a lot is very full and has a beautiful scent. However, not for the vase in ,my opinion. The flowers on Royal Jubilee are so sweet and beautiful but they are chalice shaped and they are on delicate stems that nod downward. I love the way she is free form and elegant. Nothing rigid about Royal Jubilee! .... Alnwick is a beautiful rose but mine has been very slow to grow and I have not had a lot of blooms on her yet. This will be the third year so we shall see. I think she would be nice in vase and her scent is pretty, but I have not cut any blooms because there were so few last year. Outta the Blue is fantastic! I love her. She's not like my Austin roses at all though. She is always in bloom and the colors vary depending on where the bloom is in its life cycle. They are small and there are not a lot of petals but her scent is very strong and I just keep her blooms on the shrub. One of my absolute favorites is Boscobel Check out that rose. The shrub is on the small size (unlike royal jubilee which is large and full). Boscobel has a lovely scent and gorgeous color.

I wish they'd ask for a rose! I'm much nicer when people ask. I don't like it when they steal! They must justify the stealing in their own minds...oh, they won't miss one.

OM, Kate, I would have had a fit if someone had stolen all my tulips!!!...and a note no less!...oh, well, then that makes it all OK. NOT!

I have had rose thieves on occasion. I don't think that they understand how much work it is to keep the roses happy here in Florida. When I lived in Ohio I would not even notice if a few roses were missing from my massive easy grow shrubs.

just because THEY thought the roses were great doesn't mean they are up to my standards (high!). They need to be dead headed now but what is the point?? I'm going to prune them in the next day or so...maybe today.

I just don't have any pictures of the rose garden this past year! Shame on me! Anything older than this summer they would have been babies...

Been LOOKING around and reading for months-- but, tonight I come OUT. I will blame it on the picture of Double Delight.

Tonight I am watching the temps here in North Florida - just west of Tallahassee, looks like we are going for the 28 degrees about 4am. Hope each of you have your plants protected.

Your DDelight is a beauty. I also have one that has been hanging on through everything (drought, salty irrigation-now cured). It is a real survivor and I love the coloring and fragrance.
