Just Started Lots of Hoyas Seeds, Pretty Cool!

Hi All,

I just wanted to share my excitement, my Fairy Godmother of Hoyas just shared some fresh seeds w/ me & I planted them yesterday, am VERY excited! 3 diff. varieties, I planted 112 seeds in all, please cross your fingers for me & my seeds.

Unfortunately, I didn't think to refresh myself reading here how to start them BEFORE I did so, but I had discussed w/ her using something like AV starter mix (peat, vermiculite & perlite, tho' I ran out of perlite, so I used some pumice instead), which she thought sounded OK.

Now, I see some suggestions here of long sphag, sort of wish I had thought to split the seeds up & try several diff. starting techniques. Then again, long sphag has been the Kiss of Death for me w/ Orchids, so maybe it's GOOD that I didn't use that.

Am looking to hear from others who've grown from seed here, I did do a search here (on growing from seed) & unfortunately, the one post I found here w/ pix of seedlings sprouting, when I tried to view it, I only got the dreaded red X, no pic.

Anybody care to share info/pix of recently Hoya seed sprouting experience? TIA

That's exciting, Karen.

Have grown other things from seeds, but not hoyas. Did you put them under lights? with bottom heat? under a dome or other enclosure to keep the humidity high? All these things help.

Have had success germinating seeds in sphaghnum, but it doesn't work for me with growing plants.

How long do they take to germinate? If it's a long time, there are certain things you can do.

Hi Karen,

Fancy meeting you here, haven't seen you lately at Indoor (since the last time we spoke briefly).

I've only grown from seed citrus pits (am having good success w/ that these days, keeping them on a wick & just adding in lemon pits as I use them) & mango pits (great fun, they go thru crazy color changes, from apricot to burgundy to chartreuse & finally plain old green).

Well, I am one happy Momma to report that I have sproutlings in 5 days time!!!

I put them in a clear plastic container from a dozen eggs, cool container that has a hinge & even it's own bottom tray (came w/ some organic eggs I tried on sale last summer).

I have no lights, nor bottom heat & while the container hinges closed, it's not air tight; I could see the mix drying out, so I misted carefully every day. Last nite I saw my first little babies just poking out of the mix.

Today I see abt 13 seedlings, I can't believe how fast this happened, esp. w/out addt'l light. I had heard abt using the top of the fridge as bottom heat but was skeptical; doesn't feel warm at all to my hand, but it seems to be working. The varieties are H. lacunosa, H. kentiana & H. obscura. I did label them but the labels got a bit moved around, I'll be more sure when they all leaf out later, should I be so lucky. It does seem only the Lacunosa sprouted so far, all only one variety at the moment.

Sorry Ines, I didn't realize that this had happened before on this forum. Not too often I hope. USPS priority does come most of the time within 2-3 days, but there are times that it doesn't (USPS doesn't guarantee the 2-3 day delivery - it's essentially first class mail for packages larger than an envelope). For example, a nice lady that lives quite literally 2 hours away sent me some cuttings priority mail, but tomorrow will be day 4 of my wait for what I hope will be cuttings that are still alive. I typically read the shipping and handling charges before I order. For example, there is an online nursery that has spectacular hoyas for sale, but I don't purchase from them because they have a minimum shipping and handling charge of $20.00 and each additional plant adds more cost to that S&H charge. I have a feeling (and I am NOT suggesting that this is anyone on this forum) that a lot of people don't pay attention to these charges until they have already commited to buy, then its often too late (especially on ebay). Nonetheless, the point of the people who started this thread is valid - there are certain expectations that we have that should be met when we make a purchase. Like you said before, we are dealing with live plants and all sorts of things can go wrong. So, as long as the dealer refunds the purchase price or provides a replacement if it was his/her fault, then everything is fair - regardless of future decisions to buy or sell to a particular person. My local tropical plant store has a three-day only return policy - if the plant drops dead on day four, I'm SOL. This three-day time limit came about because people would purchase a plant, not take care of it (or improperly care for it), then try and return it saying something was wrong with the plant two weeks later. The owners got tired of this and said "after three days its yours good bad ugly or dead". I do hope dealers take these kinds of discussions to heart, because it is people like us on these forums that purchase their product. It's always good to reassess costs and charges in an effort to find a way to reduce the cost to the consumer whenever possible. Ann

Jan, I really like that MG picota, I've not seen that one before. I put some growing up the lattice on the side of my shade house in red, white and blue but they don't get enough sun so I only get a couple blooms at a time and not all three at once. Oh Well, the vine looks cool. Jo

Two years ago I bought one just a little longer than yours. It has grown about a foot since then and in my opinion grows pretty quickly. I have mine in a south facing window almost all year round. In the winter I move it away a little bit when the leaves start to turn a washed out lime green (in the winter it gets direct light all day long because we are further north). Last year it attempted to grow a peduncle but failed right away. This year it tried again and the buds blasted but in the same spot it tried yet again and now I have buds that will be opening any day now. Also new this year is it started to branch out, so new branches are growing for me. Water when dry (I've neglected badly before and watered when wrinkled and it still grows like a weed) and plenty of light, if it grows too slow it is not getting enough light. I can't remember the last time I fertilized it, maybe a year ago. My recommendations at least.

Well, I just ordered 9 more varieties, so I'll have some of these for trade before long. I'm looking for a few peppers you can eat straight from the plant, a few that are extremely hot, and a few that would be good for making a hot sauce or salsa. Basically, I'm trying to get as many good varieties that I can. Since I'm a closet/balcony grower, I'd prefer only medium or small sized plants that would do well in containers. Congratulations, Karen.

Sounds as though you did everything right. Seeds are so exciting because everyday you look to see what's happening, and there are always new developments.

Any news on the other seeds? Some take longer than others. Keep us posted.

Na, the other seeds haven't done a darn thing! Am beginning to wonder if they're even viable; am hoping you're right that some just take longer than others.

Over the wknd, I put the container on the kitchen table to catch some afternoon sunshine, the Lacunosa seedlings seemed thrilled abt it, the tallest is .8" & have just made its 1st set of true leaves. You're right abt every day's new developments; I feel abt 8 yrs. old in my excitement. See ya soon,

Congrats on the lacunosa results! They were the freshest of the all the seeds you got. The other pods had opened about a week earlier.
I only had one kentiana seed sprout and it quickly died, a few of the obscura seeds sprouted and are doing fine, but I planted at least a week ahead of you. I also have a few lacunosa seedlings, but mine aren't doing as well as yours.... with all the exitement around here I've forgot to water or mist more than once! Not to mention I only planted a few of each!
