please tell me i'm getting the hang of this...is this hvx?!

Another neighbour give away but it's been inside away from anything and everyone until I know for sure. I believe it to be virused..in fact I'm 90% sure this time, but last time I thought I had it, it was in fact frost burn.

Soooo am I right this time?

I don't think so because the veins are the colour they are supposed to be.....I could be totally wrong though

Looks like the normal greening of a white center...it gets that spray painted look.

What we want to do is is just get the license and go to the Justice of the Peace to be married and THEN have a ceramony when we're settled on the east coast. Please don't do this. This suggestion--which I am seeing more and more of--really bothers me. To have a reception later is fine. To have two ceremonies is not. You can only, technically, get married once. That is the REAL wedding. Any other *ceremony* is simply theater. I think it's really disrespectful to the marriage ceremony to repeat it "just for show." If you have a DIFFERENT ceremony later (the way many Europeans do--a civil ceremony first, a religious one later--that makes sense. Or if you have a small civil ceremony, and then later have a ceremony you call "the blessing by the families" and you make up stuff for your families to promise to support and bless your marriage--that could work. But if you do it too much later, don't expect other people to get all that terribly excited about it. I know of people who got married by proxy (husband was in Iraq, she was stateside), and were going to repeat the ceremony in person--that made sense. I like Gellchom's points, as always. I think you need to talk to your dad. What can he do to you, if he's unhappy? Yell at you? Hang up the phone. Ask you some pointed questions about how well you know this guy you're marrying, but that he's never heard of? Be able to answer them--even if the answer is, "I don't speak to you that often, and I don't tell you everything, Dad." Why is it they haven't heard you mention your boyfriend in the intervening 2 years? Why is it you didn't tell your dad you were planning to get married, back when you decided to, 2 years ago? That's probably the most sensitive thing--but just get past it. Tell them now, and get it over with. Call them up and say, "remember that guy I mentioned briefly? Well, I wasn't that clear I have a friend whose dad was SO upset at the idea that his grown-and-living-on-her-own daughter (her sister) would MARRY!!! her long-time, stable, loving boyfriend, whom they had met many times before and apparently liked, that the dad was nasty, refused to go, refused to let my friend go, refused to let the mom go, and refused to speak to the sister for YEARS. I hope your dad isn't like that. But if he is, then I think you should tell him now, and then ignore him until he decides to be sane again. Because if he's going to be mad SIMPLY because you're getting married, then he's insane. But in general, I really think it's a very bad idea to surprise families with this sort of news. Tell them ahead of time, as soon as you can, now that you realize there's a problem. And if I were your parent, and you did not offer me the oportunity to be there when you married, I would be VERY hurt.

You guys are All AWESOME!! I am gonna make that list tonight. (dh has been bugging me to make a list) I stepped up the door painting today. I was able to work on 3 doors today. I was doing like 1 door at a time and there is a lot of waiting time between steps so it was taking forever. Doing 3 today I feel good about it! Sarschlos .. I'm using water based primer Kilz latex 123. I've already re hung several of the doors already and so far so good. Those doors were left out and about after they were painted for a good week before I put them back up there. I might be biting off more than I can chew. I *want* to paint the living room and entry but not sure I can get to it. If I can get some extra money .. then maybe I can hire someone to come in and do the painting of those rooms. I'm wierd.. I like to prep my own walls and paint so it will be the way I like it (roll eyes) I have a very good handyman I use though and he does drywall work to perfection. He is $20 an hour - which isn't bad at all. But with Christmas coming up .. any extra money needs to go for presents and stuff, so that is why I was just going to paint myself. See .. it's a circular argument LOL Okay.. well I will make a daily list for the cabinets and make it so that IF the cabinets are done then I can start on the living room laxsupermom: I know what you mean about indecisiveness. It can make you crazy. I can't decide what to do about a common wall between my living room and entry. I've been thinking about it for about a year LOL. good luck on choosing your countertops

Thanks for all the responses. I've had communication issues now computer issues so haven't been able to check back in. Thank u for the concerns of etching etc. I am aware of this and have chosen to proceed with marble. Until I change my mind anyway lol He came today and there were a few red flags ( thanks to my GW knowledge) First he was 30 min late out of the 4 hour window i gave him to appear. He told me he forgot. Good thing hes nice, but anyhoo.... He said the stone would be 3cm so that's good. BUT: he kept waffling on leaving the plywood. Then when I asked about support for the 15-ish inch over hang he tapped the existing plywood ( which visibly flexed as he did so) and said it would be support enough. He is creating a sample of his laminated edging for me. I clarified laminated w him. Also he said he would be ok if the slabs he brought in were not what I was looking for exactly. He would continue to exchange until I found one I did like. So I'm going to seek out other fabricators and go from there. Thanks for all the input! I forgot to ask about seams tho :(

Sorry -- I think I fell off the end of the earth -- no that was just the first week of school, meetings almost every night since then, football and band going full tilt and I thought I could function with little or no sleep. My son had a big roller coaster experience with his college and life plans over the weekend and the first of this week. I'm still not certain where that will wind up, but the crisis moment has passed. OMG -- I'm not sure I'm ready for this senior year. I'll be okay when he leaves for college, but deciding where he will go and all that goes with that is not going to be easy for this one. I was supposed to be somewhere else hours ago, so I will quickly tell you what I was playing with and see if it sparks any interest rather than spending more time trying to get back to drawing it up and then finding it's impossible or whatever. I'm really getting caught up on the living spaces and flow of the home more than the knit-picking of the kitchen itself. The main thing that is bothering me there is the pantry being so far away from the cooking and prep areas. If you have enough cabinets to put your spices and most used staples in them near your baking and cooking zones and use the pantry for extra storage, small appliances and extra bakeware -- the things you don't need daily or won't have to go grab as you adjust or improvise when cooking, it might work. Or if you cook in an orderly fashion -- all by recipes or can gather everything once and not need to run to the pantry to get something you forgot or decide you need to adjust or improve something, it may work for you. I had a kitchen with a pantry across an aisle -- not as far as this one would be, and it drove me crazy -- to the point of hating to cook. I had very few cabinets in the kitchen itself and no room for any food other than the fridge. Even my spices were in the pantry. The walk-in pantry was one of the reasons I loved the house when I first saw it and one of the reasons I hated it by the time I left. -- but it was the whole package and you have more to work with. Just make sure you know where things will go and how it will work for you. I was thinking that instead of moving the laundry you simply move the door and reorient it, but if that has moved already, it's a moot point. I was kind of hoping that would save some expense so you wouldn't hate me if I suggested taking the kitchen to the right instead of to the back so that you could create a large great room rather than having things divided. It doesn't sound like you live divided and need the two living areas and two dining areas. I will forget that for now -- looks like it might be too much and too late. However, I would not wall off the area in front of the master. I was thinking of moving the desk that faces the kitchen and putting it over between the coat closet and the master BR door, then make that open area (overgrown hallway) a reading or game area with comfy reading chairs and/or a game table for playing cards, board games, crafts, extra dining for get togethers, etc. That's an area that will work with your family room but still give you an added function. I think I would still do that and even if you go with the kitchen pretty much as planned, the area that was patio could be a crafting/activity room that is more segregated and can be closed off from the much used door. I think that closing off that space and having traffic right through the middle of it would make it a mess in terms of too much hall and too little room to work with. If you make that area a game/study area, you could make that wall separating that area from the kitchen a peninsula - go all talls on the back wall and then have a pass through so that you can do snacks, coffee/beverages and even buffets there. If you have island seating, you then have three eating areas for when the family and grandkids are all there -- possibly even room to set up another folding table - and everyone can see each other. The thing that really stuck with me was that this house didn't flow and you wondered where the space was. I am afraid that if you wall it up and box things up like you have them, you might not improve that at all -- maybe make it worse. As I said at the start -- I have been out of the loop on all that has preceded it, so if I'm off on the wrong track I'm sorry.

Wow I suck at this! Eventually I will get it right one of these days...I totally thought I had it though!

So what causes this "normal greening"...I have never witnessed this before. All my other white centers have remained white!

The classic signs of HVX would be bleeding of color and tissue collapse. I agree, it doesn't look like HVX.

I thought this looked like bleeding colour...hence why I was willing to stake 90% of my life on it! Thank goodness for that other 10%...

Always learning....

I hope I never run into HVX but if I do, I'm really hoping I can recognize it before its too late! Thank goodness again for all you helpful people!

you are overly fixated.. on what is usually a MINOR ISSUE ...

get over it.. lol ...

you are the first person.. i think it was you.. .. that actually found a plant .. in a garden.. that had it .... [i pointed it out.. right????]

most of us.. have seen it online.. and at nurseries ...

it is simply not that common...

relax.. many.. and i mean many.. hosta go through seasonal color change.. and none of it is virus ...

Yeah, since you hit HVX early on in your hosta addiction, it is probably more of a worry than it would normally be. You are the HVX vigilante! :)

As for white turning green, it is the plant making more chlorophyll to meet its needs...white leaves look nice but don't feed the plant! From what I gather, some varieties green up more than others.

You are seeing something called misting in that plant. Sometimes, as others have said, this is a plant that greens up in the middle over the season. Whirlwind does this as well as some others. Streaking and Misting are often considered desirable characteristics. However there are some Hosta that are said to be disease free, that I won't touch. Check out H. Cynthia in the library. I wouldn't touch that one with a ten foot pole, but some folks have it in their garden.

You're right...I am over worrying and it is likely due to the fact I encountered it way to early as a hosta fan!

Ken, I appreciate your reassurance and trying to calm me down and have me stop worrying so much (you are right..it was me that found it in a garden). I also appreciate that you have also been one to respond to all of my posts...whether its in this forum or another...It tells me you really know your stuff (or you're stalking me...)

Please bear with me...and try to remember I have never grown or have no knowledge of hostas (or gardening) until this year really. Last year at this time I thought there were a total of maybe 12 cultivars of hosta....which I think I called, varieties or species....

Learning all the parts (eyes, crowns etc...) and all the terminology is tough when you have no idea what it all means and are just starting out. Then throw on top all the cultivars (another new word I learned) and their soil and shade preference...and on top of that all the different MINOR changes that I have not ever witnessed. I've never seen a hosta eyes until this year which is likely why I had the one growing beside my shed having dug it up not realizing what it was. Also frost burn, sun burn, growth of a leaf that had been stepped on as an eye, rabbit munching, and now this colouring changing thing...

Then on top of all that is learning how to photograph hostas, post to this board properly, and catalogue!

I know many of you are seasoned hosta growers and probably forget your first year of gardening, and you've all been so amazing with helping me out. I truly love learning about all the hostas and look forward when I can post to the cultivar threads I've seen with my own hostas.

I will relax on the HVX subject and hopefully I can post some progress photos here once my divisions fill out a bit. I'm very, very happy with the work I have done so far and have so many of you to thank for that.

You should feel free to post if you have a HVX suspect hosta. It is a way to learn what the many leaf variances are and look like and what we should be watching for.

Each time you have a HVX concern and start a thread it's interesting and educational for me and I'm sure some others here too.

I could have used what your posts have taught me last year when I tossed a perfectly good hosta thinking it had HVX but I now believe it was not infected.

I'm glad there are so many gracious folks on this forum that will answer questions and give opinions without judgement of others.

Thank you so much Deb. Your post meant a lot to me and I cannot agree with you more!

Having been subjected to so many incidents already (frost, sunburn, rabbit munchers, colour changes, HVX, growth after being stepped on, maple key damage) I will be very surprised if I can come up with another "problem" thread. But not to jinx myself, I have still not seen slugs/snails, mold or mildew and I'm sure many other problems.

On that note, I just found a website that lists common problems and includes a photo example ('m hoping it's a good, accurate source)....based on this...I think I may have a slug problem with one of my hostas...perhaps I will post about it later!
