Cheap sources for Humzingers in S.E. PA please?

Hello and thanks for reading and hopefully answering my post. I just graduated here in West Chester PA (south eastern corner of PA in Chester County) and am searching for my 1st full-time teaching position. I am currenlt very under-employed, therefore I am economically challenged. However,I am getting quite tired of having to scrub, boil, mend, and generally fuss with my cheap old-fashoned hummingbird feeders. I need to buy a couple of humzingers! I did a search on-line and found them for $20 each plus shipping. Does anyone know of any cheaper sources preferably local (no shipping), e.g., department store, hardware store, or even on-line?

Lowe's carries a nice copy of a HZ feeder for around $10; Your local Lowe's may have one;see the link below.

Thanks, david 5311! I really do love it...and it began my quest for more doubles...not realizing how hard that was going to be (I realize now). It was one of only maybe two or three pots there, btw...the labels were jumbled and I wasn't confident, to tell the truth, that it was what it said it was! I decided to take a chance...and I'm glad I did. Occasionally, we get lucky! The thing is...I was perfectly happy with my other hellebores...until this double started...lol! I found an online place where you could look up hellebores (and other perennials..I guess a wholesaler?)...and there was/is this double white...not quite this type of double, if you know what I mean, not as many petals, but still neat and interesting. Anyway, I put in my zipcode and have now called all the nurseries listed in my area that are supposed to have it...none do...and none have heard of it...so much for that. I like that idea of national collections, too. Although I can't begin to think of how it could be done in a country as vast as ours. But, I'm sure there are great minds who can! Also, who really owns them? Well, just curious. Enjoyed the chat! Got snow here last night but by now, it has mostly gone away. Just when we think winter is done! March, always a tricky month!

Hi every one, Yesterday was such a nice day,i went to Menards looking for seeds,they had Burpee seeds only,40% off,pretty much the same seed you see every where,so i only bought a couple of packs of,Gazania-sunshine mix, and two packs of Marigold-snowdrift. Then i went to K mart hoping to buy some of Martha Stewarts seeds you all have mentionen,they had none, they did have Burpee,same old,same old. Then i went to Wal Mart-no seed,but they did have Miracle grow potting mix-$9.99-for 2 cubic feet bages-no one else had any soil out yet,can you believe that?The nerve! THEN,,,,,I stopped at Farm and Fleet-JACK -O -POT!!!!!! I bought: Sunflower-Double Dandy-2 Sunflower-Ruby Eclips-2 Sunflower-Paquito Colorado-2 Morning Glory-Picotee Blue-2 Morning Glory-Chocolate-2 Columbine-Tequila Sunrise-3 Maltese Cross-1 & China Rose-Angel Wings-1 oh,and Lemon Cucumber-2 Yep-Jack- O- Pot! I bought these mostly for trades,as i have never grown sunflowers,but these looked really pretty. Also, the Columbine-Tequila Sunrise lookes beautiful,on the package. China Rose i will plant,it lookes pretty. Maltese Cross,?????,emmmmm,not sure, i may plant this one also. Morning Glories-both-YES! Beatuful. Cucumber,i will plant,at least a couple. White Marigolds i will plant,i love white. So, whata think guys,good? Guess what i am doing today. "kwoods - why do you highly recommend Prairie Nursery over the others?" Linrose, very robust (2nd yr?) plants and a diverse selection at very reasonable prices. Well packed and shipped in biodegradable packing material (excelsior which a put out for the birds to use as nesting material). The shipping is a bit high but the plants are ready to go straight out of the gate. Their seed selections are also excellent and coincide with their plant selections. If you're doing a large planting you can order plants for instant gratification and the same seed to fill in next year(s). "I am nuturing along some C. kentuckiense from SCL that came from seed collected at the single colony found in my state." Very cool! Nice to have the local genotype. I Have some kentuckiense out of flask from SCL that I'm on my fourth(?) year w/. Hopefully first blossoms this spring! "I have many Sarracenia species/hybrids/cultivars that require clean water to prosper." Again, very cool! I use a nearby pond to pump water to my bog where the Sarrs are located. Do you have one of those 100 gal tanks to collect rainwater, on those rare occasions, from the roof? Straight S. rosea is one I don't have that is very nice, good for you. I have been collecting antho-free (no red pigmentation) sarrs the last couple years. I hope they (and you) make it through the drought.

Some things are just so bloody good, : ). I do make my own scrapple and sent out 'kits' one x-mas with a recipe to family that misses it from our youth. (our favorite home town brand is Rappa) It is just polenta with spices heavy in sage...and pork. Like a southern dirty rice, Louisiana, or Boudin that uses rice. Offal in the NYC area can get pricey. My local international store went bankrupt... : ( Bags of goat were a bit expensive. Trotters, guinea pigs, (rats, lol) were way over what i would spend. Fresh pizzels were $9 a lb. Simmering cod britches, (roe), sent DH out the door for fresh air. I love it, he hates it. I grew up on scrapple, he did not. And he loves it. A friend not familiar hates it. I do keep chicken paws in the freezer and marrow bones and beef neck bones for stock and dog treats. Just one chick paw, snipped nails, is so good in a veggie stock. (obviously not for a vegetarian), but makes a good veg stock without a strong chick or meat flavor. I've sampled a bit over the years from travel...goat heads in Greece...and a good friend wants the cod eyes after grilling..."you go girl !"...but not for me. I take shrimp tails from everyones plate and pop them back on the grill, skewered, for a bit of crisp and eat them like pop corn...where did that come from?... I love it and i've never met anyone else that does that. My love of soft-shelled crabs? (sooo much flavor wasted!) When we lived in the city, our sunday out was a favorite sushi place in the east village. Dh ordered a special....looked like a delicate tiny noodle....I pointed out, after a good taste or two that each tiny noodle had two eyes on one end and were alive and wiggling. haha

Back to nature in mdia and the bird store in gatewayshopping center off of 202 in Devon not sure how cheap though alot of places carry them most garden centers. Sarah

I just bought a new feeder at walmart $2.96 or $3.96 and it's all red. I don't think you can find them any cheapier. Christine (internetnut)

I bought 2 small round plastic feeders at Walmart last year; .50Â¢ each on clearance! Of course I can't find the second one. My hummers like this one better than the glass Perky Pet I had also purchased; it's been 'retired', since they won't use it! The cheapie has the screw on bottom, that splits apart, for oh-so-easy cleaning! I'll be going back to check at the end of the season again this year.

If it matters to you, your cheapo feeders from Wal-Mart are almost certainly made in China. P-P and HummZingers are made in the U.S. I've already raised hackles with my "nickle-and-diming" remark in another thread, but IMHO the same comment applies here. In my world, merely being cheapest is not always a plus.

Wow standard65, some of their feeders are adorable, I think I'm going to get one of those window feeders that looks kinda like the ones TexasPuddyPrint makes and I just adore.

I have the one from Lowes and it is really easy to clean.

There is a store called the Wild Bird Center in Exton. It is in the big old white house next to Toys R Us. I think their prices are usually pretty decent. You can find their phone number on Yahoo yellow pages and give them a call to see if they have the feeders and the prices.
