Jo, just wanted to let you know if you have the shepards hook type of pole or a pole that has welds, it was reported last year that someone found a dead hummer stuck in the seam of the pole, I think it got a foot caught. run a bead of clear silicone caulk on any crevase that a bird could get cought in. Sorry that didnt answer your question. My hummers like fucias.

I don't really have hanging baskets, but I've read enough to know of several candidates. On my list, except for the Salvia, and Gartenmeister Bonstedt Fuchsia, all have that droopy, trailing quality that people like in hanging baskets. Maybe some other people have more personal experience with these plants and can give you exact, specific varieties and sources.

Begonias (I'm sure some are better than others)
Nasturtiums
trailing Geraniums (My upright geraniums have zero nectar, but folks say the trailing ones are good.)
Salvia coccinea (sort of upright, but might be nice in combination)
Lantana
Impatiens
Petunias--some debate on how attractive these are
Fuchsias, definitely--Gartenmeister Bonstedt is a favorite

I just tried Torenia the first time this year and can't believe I didn't try it before. It is good for the shade thought, not sure about sun in your area. Mine has totally overgrown the fuschia that it is with and hasn't stopped blooming at all. I will do this every year. I have the purple/blue this year but I did see some red also.

The hummers liked my petunias, but I got tired of taking care of them so I went and got some red Million Bells. I've been getting hits all day! I have two baskets with a feeder in the middle, and they are visiting the flowers. Good luck!! Christy

I do petunias and million bells every year and never hardly get any action. Fuchsia 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt' get the majority of action.

My red impatiens (purchased in May) has been a hit so far this year with the female. I have it buried in my forsynthia, along with an overwintered fuschia, and my feeder. The fuschia is just starting to bloom. I've never seen them go for the Million Bells (this year I bought red), which is my favorite hanging basket for the sun. I had alot of extra petunias that needed to be out of Mr. Woodchucks reach, so I have a bunch of them hanging, but no action either. I did do one basket with Salvia coccinea "Forest Fire", an annual my zone. I figured it would do well in a basket, and it just started blooming. It's supposed to be 1'-2', but one year mine was 1' (part sun) and the next year it was 3' (full sun).

Trailing geraniums has always worked for me.

Russelia equisetiformis (fountain plant)and Stachys coccinea (scarlet betony) would be two of my favorites. Both should do very well in your area. The hummers will find you!

I think my luck with the Million Bells and the Petunias is because it is a juvenile. He can't seem to figure out the feeders, but I have several visitors. So, he keeps coming back, checking out the feeder and hitting the Million Bells and Petunias. All red, of course :)

Let's hope I get a juvie to try my red petunias. I bought them in early April and they have been blooming non-stop since!

I get the same red Ivy Geranium every year. They love it. I actually hang the feeder right from the bottom of the plant so it is protected from rain and sun. Works great.
