The photo was taken on 9/27/2011. Look at leaves at LL and UR corner. Is this HVX?

And finally on 9/22/2011 after the F. Aureomarginata and August Moon had begun to recover from the tree damage.

So I have the question, "are the anomolies in the leaves in the top picture HVX symptoms or leaf damage?" I plan on waiting until I am back home and can keep a close look on the two hostas.

What is your learned opinions?

Leaf damage from whatever,HVX,no. Lots of hostas get those spots,mine included. One of my S&S's has little spots similar to those,but mine were caused by the late freeze we had back in April. Phil

Actually Phil,I was looking at what resembles collapsed tissue between the veins on the two leafs in question. I feel it is all physical damage but was intrigued by how similar it was to pictures I have seen of collapsed tissue on the leafs of infected hostas.

If it were infected, seeing the colateral damage to the August Moon next to it I would expect it too would be infected.

As a sidenote, those branches took down the 220V power lines to my house leaving me without power for over 24 hrs.while ComEd crews worked massive outages north of Chicago. ComEd ignored me until I called 911 and reported live 220V wires on the ground. The city showed up, verified the lines were "hot" and taped off the area. The police and fire people waited until the power company showed up. It took less than 30 minutes to get fixed from the time I placed the 911 call. The message here is if you have live wires down that could kill someone, call 911, not your power company.

Replace white refrigerator?

What could happen is that you buy a refrigerator, and the potential buyer doesn't like it cause they had their heart set on a french door fridge, but you've bought a side by side, or they wanted a single-door-bottom-mount, and you've bought a french door, or the like. Furthermore, some people may want only a stainless fridge, and you've bought black. Also, you already have 3 black appliances. You risk the kitchen looking too dark. And it could be that a buyer will dislike black appliances completely, and will want to switch out all the ones you've just bought. Given these various scenarios, I would not replace the fridge. I am assuming your realtor will promote the renovated kitchen as a selling point of your house. Therefore, I would tell your realtor you are willing to offer a credit on the house's purchase price for what a new fridge would cost given that the rest of the kitchen is new. That way, you won't have to shop for a new fridge, and you won't potentially turn off sellers with a fridge they won't like, and you are offering a nice cash incentive.

Hmmm. I imagine you mean the leaves on the upper right and lower left of the first picture. It's interesting and I would watch it, but not definitive. I might test a plant that looks like that if it came from a questionable source. What the story on this plant?

Steve; I obtained it as a division of one of Leslie's (my daugter) two F. Aureomarginata. Hers sits alone at the front corner of her garage with the nearest hosta seperated from it by 12 feet of iris. You have seen some of her hosta and they all appear pristine. Her only recent aquisitions are a Sagae which she purchased 2 years ago; ventricosa & Liberty which I gave her last year, planted behind her house on opposite ends from the F.A.

The hosta in front of my F.A. is a ventricosa from the same group as the one I had given her. I'd helped my neighbor thin out her overcrowded ventricosa, which had been planted in her garden for years. They showed no HVX symptoms.

That is the best I can tell you. So far none of Leslie's, Bobbi's or mine have shown HVX-like symptoms other than the one pictured here. However, I have added "high risk" hostas, Stiletto and Cherry Berry, last year. C.B. was just a repot and shows no signs. Stiletto is pretty small and I haven't been able to get on my hands and knees to check it. But the pic of F.A. was last year and Stiletto was added last year in a different garden.

If I had only shown a pic of my F.A. and asked if it could be HVX I think you might be more inclined to think it is. But seeing the maple branch damage??? The two branches really tore those two hosta up!

The funky leaves on the Guacamole in pic#3 is from a late frost/freeze from last spring. No issue there.

That Hosta seems like it should be fine. I'd just put it on a watch list and leave it at that. It could be mechanical damage from the fallen limbs or just an odd growth pattern. Hostas are known for doing some strange growing.
