Can you use fresh goat manure?

Hey Everybody

I have been told that goat manure is one of the few manures that can be applied directly around plants without burning them. Is this true?

interesting ?? I've also heard that. have seen pix of asian
orchids farms that are using it as the sole pottting media.

Hmmm, I wonder why goat manure would be any different then cow's, they eat the same things, don't they?

Sorry but while manures are great soil amendments, you should never use fresh manure in the garden because of the pathogen risks associated with it as well as the high N levels it contains (especially if it also contains urine). Standard recommendation is to compost all manures (with the possible exception of rabbit) for a minimum of 5-6 months prior to use. You can do it several different ways: (1) add it to an existing compost pile or build a new compost pile with it and add multiple carbon sources to it, (2) age it in a pile by itself although odor and flies will be a problem, (3) spread it over the garden in the early fall once harvest is finished and let it compost in place until spring when it can be tilled into the soil. Can you add fresh manure (cow or horse) to a worm bin??

In the very small amounts that you could add to your vermicompost bin, if you did, there would not be enough manure, and the mixture would be too wet anyway, to heat up. If you did add enough manure so the bacteria could generate enough heat to be of concern you probably would notice a terrible odor before that happened.

Looking at this while covid and many other food recalls are still on going......Yes you do not want to use manure with root vegies. Anything that grows above ground is fine. And healthy animals helps prevent E-Coli! Escherichia coli is one of many causes of diarrhea in goats found frequently throughout the world. There is a high incidence associated with intensive rearing of kids under conditions of overcrowding and poor sanitation. So as long as YOU know your animals you WILL be fine. Goat manure can even be composted and used as mulch. Same as rabit poop. If your worried about geting goat poop liquid from watering you could go with a tea instead. All n All Watch your pets health. Look for SIGNS of disease IN THE ANIMALS before you use there poop. This goes with Vegies dyeing from Disease aswell. DONT use it as MULCH or COMPOST! And wash your hands.

Hello Jorgen, First of all I am curious how you get poop from the southern Bahamas? I as because I'm from the northern Bahamas and have not met another resident here as far as I know. But your bio says you live in the US... As for the poop; I would suggest googling to see how "hot" goat manure is. You can also probably find recommendations for when to use it. Some search term like "can I use fresh goat manure" or similar. That said, it also depends on what plants you are considering adding the manure to the soils of. I have mulched my bananas with fresh horse manure and they did not get burned at all, in fact responded very well. But bananas are heavy feeders and can take much stronger fertilizer than some other plants, and also that was horse manure. Let us know what you decide to do! Happy growing :) Dan

Well, for one thing goat dung are like pellets. Cows would be different because they have different digestion system. Now horse I would be more careful of. I'm going to say yes you can use it without it breaking down.

I have heard the same thing about the goat manure. Apparently they utilize their food to an extent that it is not ' hot'when it is excreted and is a drier pellet-kinda like rabbits. Goat manure has over twice as much nitrogen per ton as cow manure.

We put deposits on some registered Nubian dairy goat kids so we will have some soon and be able to test that theory out lol.

We use our rabbit manure straight into the planting holes in our edible garden and flower beds and whatever I put in there goes crazy compared to the plants that I don't use it on. It would be nice if I could also use the goat manure the same way. We also use poultry manure but we have to compost that first.

Yes, you can use goat manure directly but it is best used composted especially of you are using with vegetables because it may contain pathogens that will make you sick. You can use it directly to flowers shrubs or trees. It is extremely high in nitrogen but lacks some of the other nurients that cow and horse manue contain so you may need to add additional fertilicer to your garden.

I did a little research and also read that the goat manure may contain weed seeds since goats like to eat them. So maybe composting would be a good thing unless you are heavily mulching for weeds in your garden?
