What is the Most Under-Rated Plant in your Garden?
Comments (18)two crinums given to me as seeds several years ago. They are on alternating schedules and one always seems to have a stunning purple bloom on it. And weirdly (I did not expect this at all) white impatiens. I put a bunch in for the wedding last year figuring they wouldn't last long. But I found an apparently perfect spot for them. I've heard that with just the right conditions, they can be perennials down here. I think I may have found those conditions (bright, bright shade until late, late in the afternoon, when they get less than an hour of full sun. And I don't water them, ever.) Many that were in different parts of the yard have given up and died, or got leggy and got pulled. But these happy little mounds still look great nearly a year later....See MoreYour Favorite Hosta/Hosta Pairings
Comments (9)I have a Halcyon slightly in front of and beside Krossa Regal, with a relatively young Blue Mammoth (first year last year but a big plant to start with) and they work great together with the the blue, thick-textured leaves tying them together and the leaf shape and size, and the differing shapes, distinguishing them. It just works. I have other things in that mix, mostly golden (a small japanese maple Golden Full Moon surrounded by a small irregular "lawn" of limey green Irish Moss in front of them to the side of the Blue Mammoth, with has Aureovariegata Hakone grass beside it, backed by a Tiger Eye Sumac and all fronted with a lime-yellow-green thyme), which I think is important to the overall effect (as is the very formal dark pyramidal capitata yew with a Liberty Hosta on its other side). There is also a weeping hemlock behind the sumac. I guess my point with all that detail is that they are a great combo because of what they are with...they ground it all....See MoreWhat are your favorite small/medium hostas?
Comments (12)Ken, I've got a great Rainforest Sunrise, so you don't have to track down a pic. I'd already thought about moving a section; your endorsement confirmed that decision. Lois -- Radiant Edger is terrific! My Hadspen Blue is probably in too much shade; it doesn't look nearly as good as yours. Maybe I'll move mine. The shape of Hadspen Heron is intriguing; how large is it? From the pics, I'd guess that both HH and Golden Specter are somewhat small. Thanks for your input! Nance...See MoreRating Your Hosta
Comments (13)I am surprised that I have any that look good. The average temperature for July here was 100 degrees, and early August was even worse with temps of 107. Thank God we FINALLY got some cooler weather and rain!! This made it to the top five list of hot summers. What a change from 07. Here are some that still look good: Millenium looks great Spritzer War Paint Golden Sculpture Queen Josephine Flower Power Yellow River Leading Lady Kiwi Full Monty Blue Mouse Ears Gypsy Rose Devon Green Alligator Shoes Mount Everest Dee's Golden Jewel Polar Moon Frosted Jade Pineapple Poll Guardian Angel and Blue Angel are still holding up. Almost all of my ones with substance lost color at the leaf edges, and many with thinner leaves burned and curled. I took a walk this morning, and all things considered, it looks pretty good. The ones that have really suffered: Paul's Glory was beautiful until the 107 temps. Now the leaves are curled. June is pale from the heat. All the Fragrant Bouquet family have a yellow leaf here and there. My Sum and Substance and sports are all kind of ratty. Moonlight Sonata is ready to go dormant. I am ready for fall....See Morehostahaveum
