What are your favorite small/medium hostas?

I thought I posted this earlier, but I can't see it so I'll try again.

I have a row of hostas: Stained Glass, Dream Weaver, Earth Angel, Niagara Falls, and Strip Tease. I expect Earth Angel and Niagara Falls to cascade down the hillside -- but that will take a few years. In the meantime, I'd like to fill the grassy space with small to medium hostas; I've got smalls on the right side of the walk ( Remember Me, Island Charm, Emerald Tiara and a few seedlings). What are some of you favorite June-sized hosta that you would recommend for the left side? Here's the space -- Nance

Rainforest Sunrise .. and i will get you a picture of mine.. which is better than the library pix

I fully concur with Ken's choice of Rainforest Sunrise. Also try Radiant Edger, Hadspen Blue, Hadspen Heron and Golden Scepter. All really great hosta.

I like the idea of families -- I already do that in other parts of my garden. I've got -- and like -- Rainforest, and I checked out the other two -- Maui B. and Tropical Storm. That would be a great combo, but I'd have to order it; the nursery I'm visiting on Saturday doesn't have them. I like the Cream series. StripTease is already thriving the the garden that is being expanded, so I could go with that series also, but again would have to order. Well, actually, I know a friend would love to drive out to Van Wade's garden; I should check his listing. I already have June, Deja Blu, Remember Me and First Frost in the adjacent garden but they're in a little more shade. Thanks for the suggestions.

What's your favorite white-hot hosta?

Hi everybody, I seem to have a lot of trouble integrating the white/green ones into the landscape with hostas of different colours. I don't know why. Here's a picture of Francee in the middle and her sport, Patriot, at the top. I planted aruncus aesthofolius just starting to flower) with its white plumes in the same bed. What is your favorite growing medium for adeniums?

Al Tapla's gritty mix: 1 part - Pine Bark fines/Repti-Bark (Pets R Us etc.) 1 part- Aquarium gravel/grit 1 part- Turface-MVP of NAPA Auto floor dry compound PN 8822, but Turface is best to use. Can't find Turface MVP......crush up all your broken clay flower pots into 1/4"-1/2" chips and pieces. Sift out the dust, keep the smaller chunks. Terra cotta retains some water and moisture but doesn't stay wet. The gritty mix works for most houseplants and containerized succulents, etc. No soggy, rotting mess around the roots. If roots stay wet, they rot = plant death and/or failure to thrive. Not good. Gritty mix: Impossible to overwater plants, and fresh air/oxygen is forced into root zone each time plant is watered. No perched water table in bottom of containers. BTW, I also add some activated charcoal chips to filter out any toxins, and to keep mix sweet....just as a bonus. Frank NYC

newhostalady - Thank you, I just use a couple bags of Miracle-Gro Potting Mix. Every year it shrinks a little and I top it off with some aged compost. I may have put something in the bottom (couple bricks?) to take up space as I do sometimes with big containers but not sure. After seven years I'm thinking it might be pretty root bound but will wait until it starts to decline before I tackle removing and dividing it.

Ken, I've got a great Rainforest Sunrise, so you don't have to track down a pic. I'd already thought about moving a section; your endorsement confirmed that decision.

Lois -- Radiant Edger is terrific! My Hadspen Blue is probably in too much shade; it doesn't look nearly as good as yours. Maybe I'll move mine. The shape of Hadspen Heron is intriguing; how large is it? From the pics, I'd guess that both HH and Golden Specter are somewhat small.

Nance, how about 'Maui Buttercups', 'Blue Moon', 'Raspberry Sorbet', 'Invincible' and 'Wolverine' to name but a handful...

According to the Hostapedia, Hadspen Heron is 14" high by 32" wide at maturity. Golden Scepter and Radiant Edger both measure 14" by 35". Glad you like Radiant Edger. It's one of my favorites.

Pieter, ditto on Maui Buttercups and Wolverine.

That's what I need! Ideas for hostas I don't already have so I'll HAVE to go out and buy some! I'm keeping a list. I'll check them out in the Hosta Library but not today. Tomorrow a 75-person garden club arrives -- and sprinkles have prevented mowing. I've been grooming my gardens. Do you ever wonder whether visitors have any idea how much work we go to? N

I currently love margin of error, dark star, sweet home chicago, touch of class, alice in wonderland, captain kirk, lakeside shoremaster, LS metermaid, hadspen blue, warwick comet, invincible, devon green, and many more.

Small/medium Hosta's make up the mojority in my small urban yard. My favorites are; Fire island (sm/md?), golden sceptor, cream cheese, Venusta, Deja Blue, Blue Jay, Maui Buttercups, Red cadet and Dream weaver.

My favorites are Abiqua Moonbeam, June, and Lunar Orbit (in that order.) I love the contrast with AM, I have placed between an August Moon and a Blue Angle.
