Your Favorite Hosta/Hosta Pairings

This is not one for the "I Want One Of Each" collector. It's more for the folks that like to group them a bit.

What are your favorite Hosta/Hosta pairings?

Last year, I started grouping families of hosta. What I like about this method is that the coloration of the sports are derived from the "mama".

So, I started w/ Halcyon(first generation) and the sports of Halcyon (second generation): June, Devon Green, First Frost, Sleeping Beauty

From there, I moved onto the third generations: Sports of June, Devon Green, etc. So, I have May, June Fever, Paradise Joyce, Touch of Class, High Society.

But, back to your question: My favorite pairing would be June with Halcyon o
OR
Touch of Class with Halcyon.

But, another great pairing I have is Krugerrand with Topaz. Krugerrand is big and vase shaped, Topaz is medium and lower growing. I like how Topaz kinda tucks underneath the canopy of Krugerrand.

Oh, another great pairing: Sweet Home Chicago w/ Parky's Prize. they're essentially the reverse of each other!.... kinda back to that family grouping idea.

AS long as you don't mind some oldies but goodies . . .

Liberty and Sagae. In my garden their size and color are identical, but L has that wonderful wide edge in contrast to the thin edge of S.

Paradigm and Abiqua Moonbeam. Paired opposites. Same leaf and plant size, color and texture, but opposite coloration. Nance

Paul, I always get inspiration from your garden. You bring so many elements together amiably. Now I realize what is wrong with my cherubs, four of them, Four Seasons. They are the wrong color! The antique white or cream is a much better choice. What is that plant which looks like "asterisks"....excellent foil for the green hosta with the fern fronds. Jadie, love your Sky Dancer. Mine is doing nicely but isn't a bonus hosta. BKay, in another thread the Nakaiana Golden was said to be the same as Birchwood Parky's Gold. Did you catch that? Like getting two hosta in one gift. I bought my NGolden from Van Wade. It looks about the size of yours, mine coming here in 2012. Again, not a gift hosta. Speaking of Chris and the choices of bonus/gift plants, I thought my first one, Avocado, was because I purchased his fragrant hosta. Then he sent Rosedale Golden Goose, a nice gold. It led me into exploring other hosta, reading about the Golden Goose. Now I have golds everywhere...they really flourish here in the intense sun. The further south you travel, yeah even to the equator, the darker your tan will become in a short time.....and the more it affects our hosta as well. Rosedale Golden Goose--I think it might be leaping? Funn, with a large selection of hosta like in your garden, it is more difficult to get a unique gift. My first duplicate was Ginsu Knife from Van Wade. I consider it a learning experience too. If your first one was from another nursery, I bet they don't look like twins. Mine seldom do. It is my personal observation. What accounts for the difference? I haven't a clue.

Hey Paula - Kinda: "the only good Bishops Weed is a dead one!" jokingly that you didn't go quite far enough. We're really both on the same page. By the way, your Krossa Regal looks great. How large is the pot it is in? I bought mine with the intention to plant it in a large Grecian urn, creating an image of a living green fountain. I eventually decided to use a smaller vase shaped hosta in the urn, with KR & Regal Splendor flanking it behind a pair of Blue Angels. I won't post pics of it this year because my gardens need so much work. The weeds won't do them justice. Maybe next year if I don't do something "klutzy" again next spring. Les

Theresa, my favorite line from your comment is "they start with a BANG, often undergo change all season long, and finally go out with a BANG in late fall." I never thought of it in that way. It brings a smile on my face each time I read it. I also agree with your other comments, but have a different view on your last---"The one that makes my heart go pitter-patter at the moment, and such moments always change." I cannot say what will happen next year or the next, but regarding my three favorites this year (GE, Paul's Glory and Earth Angel), I loved them from the moment they woke up to the day they began to deteriorate. But, so far, I cannot say EXACTLY what it is about them that I love so much and why they (out of all the others) bring joy to me. Deb, I agree 100 percent with your comment "It's fun learning new and interesting things from the Hosta Forum by reading newbie's questions and seasoned hosta growers/gardeners responses and experiences." Thank you everyone for expressing your views and allowing others to learn. Phil, I have a young Sagae and two Earth Angels, but do not know much about Lakeside Shoremaster. Could you tell me what it is about these three that make them your favorites?

Blue Angel has been the first big hosta in my garden and it is still my favourite. I have bought some others but they still need to grow. Second on my list is Green Acres and Regal Splendor. My Jade Cascade is still small, but I have seen one in a 180 l pot and it was amazing. I gave my Empress Wu to a friend last year because it is only size and not so much character. If you have a big garden it's easy to keep , but I had to make a decision... I hope that Valley*s Ice Giant will make it to my list of my favourite big hosta... and not to forget Ivory Coast Karin

I have a Halcyon slightly in front of and beside Krossa Regal, with a relatively young Blue Mammoth (first year last year but a big plant to start with) and they work great together with the the blue, thick-textured leaves tying them together and the leaf shape and size, and the differing shapes, distinguishing them. It just works.

I have other things in that mix, mostly golden (a small japanese maple Golden Full Moon surrounded by a small irregular "lawn" of limey green Irish Moss in front of them to the side of the Blue Mammoth, with has Aureovariegata Hakone grass beside it, backed by a Tiger Eye Sumac and all fronted with a lime-yellow-green thyme), which I think is important to the overall effect (as is the very formal dark pyramidal capitata yew with a Liberty Hosta on its other side). There is also a weeping hemlock behind the sumac.

I guess my point with all that detail is that they are a great combo because of what they are with...they ground it all.

Thanks, but it'll have to wait a few months....I don't have any pictures of that area or really any areas in my garden, but will be taking lots next year!

Rainforest Sunrise, Buckshaw Blue, Tambourine, with Nancy Gill just peeking at the bottom left, Green Piecrust just peeking at the top center, and a centerpiece of Seafire!
