Where Are You Barbara Ann??

So I planted Barbara Ann in a large pot last year and so far no signs of her emerging. I scratched around in the pot a bit and there still seems to be a root mass. I thought perhaps I had planted her too deep. What to do now? The soil seems pretty "wet" I'm wondering if I should dig out the root ball and put it in a small pot & try to baby it along or is it done?? How can I tell if it has root rot?? Never had this happen before so I need any help or words of encouragement you guys can offer me. Thanks a lot.

If its not up yet... and the pot seems wet... I'd dig it up and see if there seems to be enough root and crown intact to try to save it.

If there is enough to try to save, I'd look up the right dilution (I can never remember it) for some bleach and water to dunk it, then I'd replant in really good draining soil or even bark mix - something that would give it enough moisture but not leave it wet. It will then either grow or not...

Nothing lost by trying except a little time, and we learn more from failures than successes ;-)

Almost any time I lose one in a pot, I find the soil held too much water for too long and the thing just rotted... my solution is to put cheap varieties or nice seedlings in the pots - a lesson learned after losing a magnificent Guardian Angel...

Right here!!!! Just kidding - my hosta Barbara Ann is planted in a raised bed and has just this week started sending up a shoot. I'm in zone 6 so maybe it's not yet time for your Barbara Ann to wake up. Hope that might alleviate some anxiety.

Hi Everybody, I was also amazed by this Clematis raised by Barbara Ann Fox. I received the following reply form Edith Malek, President of the USA Clematis Society: Dear Hannes, Sadly, the clematis you are asking about was a one time occurrence. Barbara Fox registered her gorgeous clematis in 2004. She told me that it reverted back to its original form a year later. That is why it is not in commerce. What a shame! I don't think it is Sweet Innocence either. Neither the pictures in the Hosta Library nor my personal garden photos have the corrugation shown on your plant. Here is mine. '' IS it fragrant? Sweet Innocence is fragrant. While it may not be SI, it could be another fragrant, but honestly I don't recognize a specific one it might be. Knowing the blooming period and the flower color would aid the ID your hosta.

I too bought Barbara Ann and as you I love a challenge. It was $6.99 in 2013 with two shoots and figured I have wasted more money on other things that were not as pretty. I have never had edge problems and have it located to the east and by the edge of flowerbed so maybe it does get less water but not into special care si it is what it is and if it lives that is even better . Looks like the same size as your's is Jo or maybe just a little bigger but not by much. The color holds up well all summer. Very pretty hosta

So now I am confused...sounds there may be a chance of saving her...should I dig her out "idiothe" and relocate her into a smaller pot, or to let her be "Barbara" and hope for the best. For the record we've had a very early spring here so I would have thought she'd be up by now...Just bought her last year so not much experience asto whether or not she's an early bloomer, or a late bloomer. Thanks again for your input.
