A friend of mine lives in Medina Ohio.

She would like to know which plants and flowers attracts hummingbirds.

I had great luck with red cannas. I had hummingbirds last summer for the first time due to haveing them in my garden. they loved them.

I am receiving lots of "cannot send to this email address" so please make sure you either forward an address where you can be reached or update your settings in GW. Unfortunately, I don't have time to track individuals down to make sure you are receiving the messages I'm sending. :) Julie, there seems to be a problem with GW and email addresses when you get the folloow-up replies emailed to you. Salvia There should be some in that color range that are marginally perennial in Z8a, although I did lose 4 of 5 in my own Z8 to a out-of-ordinary cold snap last winter.

Are green flowers hummingbird pollinated?

That's a good question and I don't know. A quick answer is that there are no hummingbird species native to Australia, but there are other nectar-eating birds. From what I can find Correas are generally thought to be bird pollinated (and possibly also by bees?). Another quick answer is that there is precedent for green (or greenish) flowers being hummingbird pollinated--an example that I found (I assume there are many?) is Passiflora viridiflora. My impression is that many species of Passifloras that are green or white tend to be bird or bat polinated (not counting white color varients/mutants of normally colored species). My general bias is to think of flowers that dangle on peduncles as being bird (or I guess bat) pollinated. Are insects even capable of sensing motion at a distance? Flutterbug, I wish I could remember the exact number of years, but it was so many that I was beginning to think it would never bloom. It must have been at least 6 or 7 years, and I'm even tempted to say 10. It was ridiculous! Worse yet, I don't think I can give you any smart advice because I don't think I did anything special to get it to bloom. Maybe it would have bloomed sooner if I'd fertilized it, but I didn't. I just kind of ignored it and as the years dragged on, wondered how the darn thing could look so healthy and yet not produce a single flower. Finally, my impatience was rewarded with blooms last year, and the hummingbirds just loved them! Part of the problem could be that it just doesn't get that much sun, and Pittsburgh also tends to be a very cloudy place. Although blooming, it doesn't bloom as heavily as specimens I've seen in other people's yards. I think mine gets sun from about 7am until 1pm, but some of it might be filtered by a silver maple tree--not a tree that causes dense shade, but it is still somewhat shady. This could well be the problem for me. It's also the variety called "flava," having pale golden orange blossoms instead of the usual bright pinkish orange. I assume you have the common type. Maybe flava is a more reluctant bloomer than the species, and you'll have better luck with yours. I will say, though, in spite of the non standard bloom color, it's an excellent hummingbird flower, and well worth growing if you can get it to bloom. I hope this helps!

Thanks so much! Since I've had hummers visiting my yard this "winter" if that's what you call what we have here in Miami... LOL I think I've inspired others to grow plants for the hummingbirds! They actually brought me so much happiness and I'm preparing for their next visit!

Trumpet vines are great in Texas. The hummers will find those right away. However, the ants and bees do too. They are a fast growing vine so don't plant them where you can't control by pruning often.

In my yard, tall Red monarda is their favorite. They are also very fond of the purple flowers on the common sage in my herb garden. They seem to love basil in flower. Coneflowers and zinnias are also popular. Some flowers like my azaleas, daylilies, hybrid lilies, and marigolds draw them in to my gardens but don't have much nectar. They go to the flowers briefly but then hit feeders I have placed nearby. The other flowers I mentioned get longer visits so I am guessing they are actually feeding on those plants.

In my South Jersey yard, it's definitely cardinal flower and coral honeysuckle.
