Hummingbird Garden

New to Hummers

I met a guy who had about 100 hummingbirds in his backyard last year, I thought it was so cool to watch them so I bought feeders and put them up a few days ago, I saw 3 males in two days, question is why no females yet and will I soon see more of them in my yard?

I did my homework on how to care for them so I'm OK there but would accept any kind of info I can get.

I live in Louisiana.

Your first to return and first to leave are adult males. My first birds show up in mid April, and my last females leave in mid September. I usually see the females by mid May.
Later in the nesting season say 15 Aug and later up here, I have only juveniles and adult females. Good luck

i want to get hummers how do i get theam i have a feeder red ribbons and red million bells and no hummers how do i get theam

Something makes me think that the hummers need a visual area to feel confident if they are new ones. Although they adapt quickly regardless, if they have options they choose the best route with least risk when given it. They become still when they hear crows overhead and wait until it's all clear. So if they hear crows and can't see them well, they stay put or go elsewhere. I noticed tis by observation with feeders under my pergola. Jamie, My wife and I have had our 4 feeders out for a month now as well. Until about a week ago we thought we had no hummers. Last Saturday I went to change the feeders with some fresh nectar. Usually I do this around nine in the morning, but my son had Tball that day so I did my chores (funny it was my wife who wanted the feeders in the first place, but some how I ended up with the cleaning and changing. lol) around 6:00 am and while gathering the feeders for cleaning I was buzzed several times. Seems we have early morning visitors for the time being. Last year my wife and I setup our first feeder. We got lucky and within a week it was being visited non-stop. Enjoying their company we bought several more feeders. By September we had over two dozen hummers visiting from sun up to sun down. I know it's hard, but be patient and I know you will be rewarded.

That large of a containter once it is planted and watered thoroughly is going to weight a ton! I sure hope you have strong enough supports on your patio to hold it or it may just bring whatever is holding it up down to the ground. Now that said here are a couple of suggestions: trailing asarina, trailing nasturtiums and maybe wild morning glory will trail although it prefers to climb. If it was me, I would put that large container on the ground with a trellis and put climbers like cypress vine, cardinal climber, and the native morning glory. OH My.....let's hope the little (FAT) girl knows what she is doing hanging around. I haven't seen one in my area, southwest VA, since Oct. 5th. I still have my feeders up just in case. We are having warm weather but colder this week. I am trying to get myself in "winter mode" of THE WAIT for April when they are baaack :-) Wish we could know for sure in the spring if the same ones are back at the same feeders. I know this is what people think. This spring I want to try to see a marking of some sort. One friend had one with a white spot on his wing that identified him. Two years ago I acquired a spider flower (I also call it a firework plant) and I saw my first hummer on it. This was what triggered me to create a hummingbird garden. So last year I went out and got a honeysuckle which bloomed already and now I have nice red berries/seeds on it, but no hummers. I am considering planting a couple of Salvias and a couple of Bee Balms which I read are two very popular plants for hummers. Is there anything else I can do to help draw the hummers to the garden?

jk - you are off to a good start. It seems almost unanimous that they like red-flowering bee balm (with Jacob Cline being one of the most popular favorites). If you don't already have a feeder, you could put one up near the plants and also consider putting up some red objects (ribbons, etc) around your place to get them curious and draw them to check out your plants. Once they find you, they seem to be good about returning. So far this morning, I have at least one female (or maybe 2 - not sure yet) who has come at least 11 times this morning that I have seen when actively observing the feeder.
