Hi Surprised no body answered this . One came with my house. Was planted directly under power lines next to a fence on the property lines. Ended up taking it out . Do you want to grow them with a fan shaped trunk or as a cllump with multiple heads?? the best would be the trunk if you have room ?? They grow year around as long as the weather is suitable will get very large very quickly If you do have the room and like to prune they can be very extraorinary I found they had way too many drawbacks for my setting . Hi Like all flowering plants they are classsified by the flower but there are other differences particularly growth habit . The travelers palm will form a trunk which carries the foliage in the fantastic fan shape . getting at least twice the height of WBOP which is far more cumping in growth habit though it will form a trunk There are also several subspecies of Strelitzia regina which have slightly different growth habits but remain under 8 feet with no trunks flowers are far more spectacular . Another is S juncea which has tube shaped leaves There is also a S. American relative which you almost never see for some reason. Google Strelitzia the genus name for more info than you'll ever want to know lol gary

Gary, your info on the bad habits of this plant is helpful. I need to know them so I can plan ahead what to do with it. Right now it's sitting about a foot from the fence. I hope it won't damage my fence when it grows bigger. I can trap the flies, but the bees can be a real problem especially when my daughter's play area is quite close to it. Palmshaun, your TP by the pool is a beauty. Do the bees bother you when you're using the pool? Barbcoleus, your TPs are enormous! I wish mine will grow up quickly to have the trunks like yours. The area I'm in now is 9a (Central FL). If it stays 40's in the lowest, everything should do well because I do have some cold sensitive plants like Lychee, Longan (Kohala), papayas and bananas. I lost my Jackfruit last month (even though it's only in the 40's). My Mango also died a year ago. Thank you guys for responding.

Thanks again for the added info, will have a go using various methods and see what happens although as I said, I don't hold out much luck with these guys....we're not quite as tropical as Singapore yet! We saw some very big TP's lining the expressway to/from Changi Airport and all the fronds were flattened in the same plane but unfortunately I couldn't get at my camera as we were in the taxi. I presume thay all align their fronds in a certain direction to catch the rays, or was it just that they were perhaps growing in a semi-restricted place,ie alongside a high foliage/flower covered wall that made them grow at the same angle?
