Amazing. We battled them in Chicago my entire pre-Kansas life, and they were always gone by mid-August, turned into grubs that killed the lawns. They showed up in KC a year or two ago, but so far so good here. If we ever get heavily intested -- it's time to move again!

OMG...that WAS alot of hummers!! How in the world did that guy get them to come to him and feed right out of his hand, especially in the beginning of the video? He wasn't holding anything that was red, or that appeared to be a feeder. I think I would have taken off running for shelter if all those hummers came flying at me LOL. That was a very good video, thanks!

Hummersteve, maybe one of your wandering males will find his way over here. I think my lonely little lady could use some male companionship! Also, Hummersteve, did you notice my Relative Breeding Abundance thread? It's a link to a map, showing that during the breeding season, you are in an area of relative abundance for breeding hummingbirds. Not so for me, and a lot of other people, although I suppose that locally they might reach very high densities, but just not get recorded on that map of the entire country. I've decided that if I expand my garden enough, maybe those breeding bird surveyors will have to put a darker pink dot over our yard! Also, thanks Anita, and Tracey. I can very much relate to your impatience, Tracey, but imagine she will be showing up soon. They move mysteriously, and by their own schedules, which don't always jibe with our expectations or with those dots on the migration map. That's cute the way she buzzes you. Any idea why she does that? Is she trying to tell you the sugar water needs changing, or just saying hello, or thanks, perhaps? I took a picture of mine today from inside the house, and when the shutter went off (but no flash), she stopped sipping and moved closer to the window to check me out. Then she zipped off to parts unknown. She's really is a precious little cutie. I hope she stays.

DiC, LOVED that hungry beetle drawing! Nippon beetles have not (shhhhh) yet been a problem here. Perhaps all the heirloom Marigolds i grow? Now the almost look-alike rose chafers r another bugger entirely. Two years ago they ate all the flowers offa the climbing Hydrangia vine. Last year they *really* P.O.'d me when they finished with the hydrangea and moved down-field and ate all the blossoms offa my grape vines! The local extension agent started to explain all the chemicals i could use, and suddenly my cell phone signal quit (oops). Since they r apparently a cyclical problem, I'll wait them out (like voles). This year no big problem, had climbing hydrangea flowers, grapes are about to be ripe, and unlike last year, the apple trees are very productive (my shoulder is *SOð sore from twisting the food mill putting up apple sauce). To every season, turn, turn, turn
