Do olive trees have thorns?

I was recently asking for help from the forum in identifying some of the plants in my new yard. I think it was patiogardner who suggested that my two mystery trees looked to her to be Shady Lady olive trees. I do see the similarities, but am still uncertain.

I did realize this weekend that the tree has thorns, after I got stuck by one (my thumb still hurts!) So my obvious question would have to be: "Do Shady Lady olive trees have thorns?"

I'm linking again to my "mystery plants" photo album, which has pics of the trees in question. I would appreciate if anyone familiar with Shady Lady would let me know if these look like them, and whether Shady Lady has thorns. Thank you!

Yes, Black Olives have thorns, some are very thorny, others less so. They are not really related to olives at all but the name got hung on them by a mix up in the introduction station many years ago.

In your other mystery post, the last tree is Horseradish Tree (Moringa oleifera).

Thank you for the information! Yes, looking up pictures of the Cuban Tamarind I can see you are right. That definitely looks like a Drumstick tree or Horseradish Tree. Thank you for that!

So maybe those two trees of mine ARE Shady Ladies...

Terro is available from any nursery. Boric acid if you wih to make your own bait as I do is avalible from any pharmacy. Recipes for "ant bait" are found by using searh in the forums. Ultrafine horticulural oil is also at any nursery under one or several brand names. Diazinon is no longer being sold and killing the ants will not cause the death of the scales which do well with or without the help of ants. Boric acid in a trap is not available to anything but ants and horticultural oil is a parafine based oil that works by smothering smothering and is not toxic to kids, pets, or birds. Al

I've got lots and lots of osmanthus up here. I'v found that it's one of the few plants that are said to like part sun but actually love lots of sun even in Texas. They bloom best in sun and grow leafier in sun. But they live just fine even in total shade. Love this plant. The blooms are small and insignificant except for the apricot smell which waftes through the garden. It likes Texas so much that I've got 60 or so. They form the walls for my garden rooms. Believe me that you won't enjoy that many because the fragrance really does get overpowering. But they live and thrive and grow quicky with no water and plenty of sun. I see them all the time at the big box stores. Easy to root but slow to grow from a cutting.

i have become interested in growing an olive tree from seed. i know it's rather hard to do, and that it may not fruit/will be different from the parent tree, but i'm very curious none the less. i was wondering if anyone had a tree which fruits, who would be willing to send me a couple of pits to experiment with? i also posted a message about this on the seed swapping forum, but thought i might get more chance of finding someone with a tree here. i would of course send a number of different seeds in return, which i would discuss with anyone who was interested. thanks!
