anything I can plant now?

I've sadly neglected my two raised beds. I had a baby 7 months ago, and I've started homeschooling my 11 year old, and life has been crazy. But now that the weather is nice and the baby is easier and I want to get out there and plant something! I have two 4 x 4 beds. Currently there is one Bonnie Select tomato plant and a jalepeno pepper in one of them and two green peppers and a small culantro plant in the other. The poor tomato plant has some kind of disease....small cream colored speckles on the leaves (not bugs, actual spots on the leaves), but hasn't died yet. should i get rid of it, and is there anything I could still plant this late in the year? I'm thinking some lettuce....anything else?

Broccoli, cauliflower,kohlrabi, greens, radish, spinach, cabbage, beets, onions, peas, carrots. Seems there are a lot more things to plant now than in the summer.

It is the best time of the year for cold season veggies. If I was you I would take the tomato plant out of the bed, they take a lot of space and can get fungal diseases. If it looks good put it in a pot if not dispose of.

In the beds you can plant different lettuce, carrots, beets, greens. You can get seeds at any big box store, you can also buy some transplants like broccoli, cabbage.

I usually plant together seeds that require about the same conditions to grow and mature about the same amount of time, if you read the packages you can figure it out. You can also plant bush peas, the 11 year old can be a little helper. If you start them early in life to help in the garden they will always like veggies. When my daughter was little she would have carrots and peas for breakfast that she would also picked.

Make sure that you amend to beds to be successful, later on you can also add containers to increase the amount that you can plant. Keep us updated on your progress.

I followed the Ohio State recommendations, which said to just plant 'em deep in one go. They said there wasn't a need to slowly fill in the trench - you could just fill it in all at once. So that's what I did ! They're probably somewhere around 8-10 inches deep. I admit, they came in the mail a solid 2 weeks or more before I got them in the ground. I ran the roots under water to get them wet and kept them wrapped in the wrapping they came in, which is what the instructions said to do if you weren't going to plant them right away. I didn't put them in the fridge, however, and maybe I should have. They were what I'd call "dry" when I planted them, but the little crowns with the "nubs" on them which is where the growth would come from were pretty plump and looked alive, so I figured they were ok. The roots were dry, but not shriveled. I just feel like I'm wasting a huge amount of space in my garden - wish they'd either come up or I knew for sure they were dead so I could get on with things! I live in east central MS. I usually have very good luck this time of summer with second crop cucumbers (if the pickleworms leave them alone), cowpeas and okra (like farmerdill said: my hero). I turn a bit of organic fertilizer into the soil, rake it smooth and plant. Then water daily until germination. They typically come up in about half the time they take in the spring. It's time now to plant pumpkins for Halloween too. There's still time for sweet potatoes if you can get slips. I also have a good stand of yardlong beans that I sowed about 10 days ago. This is my first year for them, but I am told they do well in heat. (I believe they are in the cowpea family.) I took cuttings from my tomato plants last week to root for fall. I have not done this before, but if you have space, it's worth a shot. I plan to add blood meal to the soil before planting. I'll be starting broccoli, kale, and collards from seed next week. Farmerdill, if you check back in, can you tell us if you plant fall tomatoes? Any tips on how and just when to set out transplants?

Well, it is late, but I would think your best chance would be lettuces. You might try starting the seeds inside and then plant them outside once they get a few inches tall. (I did mine that way this fall because the seed wouldn't germinate in our heat.) I have had great luck with romaines and leaf lettuces growing through the entire winter here, and I planted them in window boxes. I planted shallots less than a month ago and they came right up. Ditto with garlic. I imagine that bunching onions would do the same.

Gregsmama, If you could answer a couple of questions, we could answer your question better. Do you already have prepared beds, free of grass and weeds, with good soil? If not, you'll have to prepare a place to plant your plants. Also, are you looking for permanent plants, like shrubs or small trees? Or, do you just want some winter-blooming annuals like pansies or snapdragons that would add a little color? Let us know, and we'll see what we can come up with. And, keep in mind that you can only plant what you can find, so at this time of the year more than the rest of the year, you are at the mercy of the retailers. Down here in southern OK, they are getting some plants in at the big box stores, but not very many yet. If you visit real nurseries, instead of home center stores or discount stores, you'll probably find a better selection. Dawn
