Plum Cottage posies

Thought I would post a few pictures from our little haven. I just got a new computer a couple of weeks ago, with Vista Home Premium, so am having to learn a whole new way of doing things. Plus, we had to get a USB floppy drive for my Sony Mavica camera, as the new computer does not have an internal floppy drive. I am using a new ftp file upload program too, so here goes.

The first is a Maggie. A hard rose to capture the color of, but this one really turned out good.

I think this is philadendron blossom. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This is Duchesse du Brabant with croton and firecracker.

That's it for now. I did get out this morning and weeded and trimmed for two hours. The gardens badly needed work as I didn't do much this summer.

Maggie is absolutely gorgeous! And my Duchesse de Brabant turned out to be the white version, Madame Joseph Schwartz. Still pretty, but not nearly as pretty as YOURS. I'll have to put Duchesse back on my Wish List!

I could be wrong, and I know some philos bloom, but your white flower looks a lot like a spathiphyllum to me. (Peace Lily) Could that be it, or is it actually a vine?

Your roses look lovely with the crotons surrounding them. Very pretty pictures, FlowerLady! Thanks for sharing.

Patti ~ Where are you, since you aren't at home? If you don't mind my asking. Will you have a lot of snow at home to shovel? I've heard about others covering the bases of their plants with snow because of the insulation. Don't work too hard. I know, easier said than done. : -) Natal ~ I do think most things will be ok. They will probably get wind/cold burned like you say, but should bounce back as this isn't supposed to last. I had some lovely double impatiens turn to mush one year. Kathy ~ Oooohhh, you've got really cold temps coming your way. I've heard about using Christmas lights for heat in little greenhouses. Which reminds me, I need to cover my little greenhouse with something. Most of my gardens are pretty protected, so I hope they will do fine. Right now it is 49 and feels like it is 38. Brrr. We'll see how cold it really does get tonight. It may break a record which was in 1962, for this time of year. FlowerLady

Denise ~ Thanks. Have and open garden? Yikes! I don't think so. :-) I'm a selective picture taker, and my gardens aren't ready for touring, except via the web. After looking at all of the wonderful gardens here, I've still LOTS of work to do in mine. It's an ongoing project, one I keep learning with as I bumble along. Some of my OGR's are in the ground, others are in pots. I do this on a shoe string. Haven't bought any new ones in a few years now. I read about OGR's when I first got interested and they are more hardy and can handle poorer soils. I know mine don't really have the room they need, I'm just working with and around them. Jellybobelly ~ Thank you and you are so right about the pictures everyone shares being encouraging and inspirational. Looking at pictures can make one feel a tad 'green' at times, yet they make one want to get out and work in their own gardens. I wish scents could be shared also. There are so many things I'd love to smell, lilacs, peonies, and much more. Felix ~ Thank you. I'm sure you are giving your roses way better care than I am. After all, you've got some wonderful free fertilizer and you're great with plants. I really don't do anything special. I give them a dose of Miracle-Gro every now and then, sometimes a scattering of epsom salts, and sometimes a drink of stinky alfalfa tea. I need to do that again. I talk to them, sometimes nicely and sometimes NOT, like when I get stuck with a thorn or three or four. :-) Gardening is a learning experience that is never ending. It brings much joy, in spite of all the hard work. I've learned and been inspired here in this forum and others. I've traded seeds and a few cuttings and have some wonderful additions to my humble gardens. Thank you all once again. FlowerLady

Oh my gosh Felix. What can I say? DH and I just got up from a nap, I sat down here at my computer to see what is going on and saw this thread. I couldn't remember a thread I had started with that name. I started reading to myself, then started reading it out loud to DH hardly able to do so with tears streaming down my face and emotion choking my voice. DH said that is so nice. Then I read the other posts and he said "But, they didn't see the junk!" That made me laugh right out loud. DH is my best friend. He encourages me, he inspires me to be a better person. I wouldn't be where I am today without him. Together we have created our haven that we call Plum Cottage. Felix and Sylvia ~ Thank you from my heart for this wonderful post. I'm afraid it is full though, lol. I hope you will be inspired anyway through pictures. We named our place Plum Cottage because of the house color that we had specifically mixed up by a paint co. We wanted something in a purple/grey color. I took a book with a picture, took a piece of pine bark and maybe something else to the paint place and the guy started mixing pigments, until he came up with a color that we liked. A cottage color for our little 50's cottage. We all have created our own unique havens in this world that we live in. Large or small, formal, informal and everything in between they are all beautiful, created in love. DH are thankful to God the great Creator, for all that we have. Thanks Felix. With all the rain we've had lately everything is pretty lush. Lots of new growth. I want to check out my Blue Sky vine this morning to see how it's doing. Yours is just gorgeous. Mine was blooming like that in it's old location, but hasn't bloomed like that in it's new location. Do you feed yours anything? I just love those blue/purple blooms.

Thanks Marcia ~ Duchesse is such a pretty rose. I didn't know there was a white version. I'll see if I can get some cuttings rooted. I have made a couple more of this from the original.

This white flower is from a vine. I'll take a picture of the leaves when it is light out.

I'm looking forward to getting out and working in the gardens again this morning before it gets to miserable out.

Pretty flowers, thanks for sharing your pictures. I was wondering about the Duchess De Brabant, it looks like the rose sits right with all the other plants? Is this one ok in a border?

I looked through your Plum Cottage pages, you did a good job, it is a beautiful site! keep adding to it :-)

I love My Thumbergia Grandiflora. It was a gift from my lovely
bride. I feed her ginger manure and water her frequently, the vine that is, not my lovely wife.

Good afternoon Evelyn ~ Duchesse is in a border yes, so far she's doing well. Her canes go out through the different hedge material and bloom out on the sidewalk side. I also have Louis Phillip growing in this are too, and it does well. It is one hardy rose. ~ Thank you for visiting my website. I really need to update it, just too much going on lately. You just inspired and encouraged me to think about doing more pages.

Felix ~ At first I thought what is ginger manure, then I remembered Ginger the horse. :-) It sure is a beautiful vine. I loved that picture of you and Sylvia, you make a lovely couple.

It looks like it might rain and it is predicted to do so, but just a few sprinkles so far. It is still very warm and humid out.

I would like to get some Ginger manure *sigh* that is the best stuff!
Flowerlady, thanks for explaining. I asked because I was wondering if I could plant more around the rose plant, the Duchesse sits by herself and is doing ok, but not my Louis Phillip, 'he' is under a tall Crepe Myrtle. Maybe this is too much shade.
