Camera suggestions

I'm getting geared up for this coming season :) and since my camera (or memory card) just bit the dust...it seemed like a great time to get a new camera....

so I"m seeing 5, and 8 and 12 megal pixels etc.... and all kinds of variation of zooms like XXXX optical zoom and XXXX (cant recall the name but another kinda zoom....

what do all these numbers really mean? what will they do for you?

Any help, suggestions will be greatly appreciated....I do recall hearing from others last year on what cameras they had for some of their great photos that were posted.

I have wondered about a few hummingbird shots on this site, but the best informational resource for digital cameras would not be here. Try www.dpreview.com , they have hundreds of sample shots covering every kind of camera.

I really dont see why this forum wouldnt be the perfect place to ask about the cameras people use since the forum is filled with people who take digital photos of humingbirds.

How can this not be a good place to ask for input. Maybe I should reword my subject line...and state, please tell me the type of camera you use for hummer shots.

We have a Canon Powershot SD800IS (IS = Image Stabilization)which is a great little camera. Easy to carry around. You can also do movies on it and it has the telephoto lens built in but has some limitation when fully extended. I've had that one for about 4 years. The other camera which I'm still practicing with as it just has too many bells and whistles is a Canon Rebel EOS XT. We have a telephoto lens on it which I really like for garden shots since I do not have to get into the garden bed to take pictures. The lens has Image Stabilization also which when combined with the weight of the camera and lens it is a great item to have. I do switch between the cameras based on what I'm planning to photograph. I have a Fuji FinePix F700 which I really love. Besides taking great digital photos, it also has the capacity to take 15 minutes movies with sound (I had to upgrade the Picture Card for that length of movie but it was worth it). Also with the upgraded Picture Card, I can take 1001 pics. At my nephew's wedding, I took over 280 pics and about 10 or so movies, before the battery stopped. I got pics and movies the hired professional photograph did not. My nephew and his new bride especially loved the close-up movie of their wedding vows. I took a movie of the neighbor kids playing football and could play it back frame by frame. It was great and the kids loved it. It can also do night photos, wide range, macro pics (for closeups of flowers, bugs), etc. I really love it. One of it's nicest features is there is a "cradle" it sits in which "charges" the battery instantly. It also comes with a battery charger you can take with you on trips. I've never had to buy another battery yet. The cradle (like a cell phone charger) is always plugged into the computer and it allows you to put the camera in the cradle and just push a button to download the pics. So much easier than having to plug it into the back of the hard drive of your computer every time. I bought it on QVC a few years ago for around $300, it was on sale from $800 or so. You might check their site or any of the other home shopping networks and see what they have. I know there are some on eBay if you'd like to check those out. Alison- how scrumptious are those cats?! I must admit that I had two of the three items mentally purchased as soon as I saw the theme of the swap which is why I was so disappointed when I looked like I was going to miss it because...well...I just love these things and I loved the idea of sharing them. The 3rd is giving me a little difficulty if only in the having to narrow it down to 1 more but it gives me an excuse to go shopping & see what sings. Cloud_swift- I thought of the fragrances because my husband is vilely opposed to anything scented. Potpourri, candles, sachets, even lotions. I've never had a problem with fragrances but after 14 years of having none in the house I find that I've become very sensitive to them. I can barely walk past a place like Yankee Candle. My MIL, on the other hand, adores scented things & is constantly giving them to us...whereupon they get promptly regifted or donated. So I guess I'm overly sensitive to sending my partner something that they might find repellent :-). In my excitement I missed the caveat of no food. Which eliminates the concern about food allergies. But it's still good to know for future swaps! Nina

I've got the Canon Power Shot S2 IS. The price on this one has fallen to under $500 since the S3 is out. If you see and S1 for sale, don't bother - the later models are much better. I like the camera with exceptions; It has a lot of good features and a couple of bad ones. It does not have an optical viewfinder, but I don't think you'll find a long zoom digital with an optical view finder - Its too difficult to make an effective (range finder type) view finder for telephoto more than 3X. (Of course, if you go above the $500 price barrier, there are Single Lens Reflex Digital cameras that gives through the lens viewing. In general, the sensor area is larger permitting improved picture quality, but will have a hit on zoom range. Typical zoom ranges are 3 to 1 because the lense has to cover a much larger sensor. Also, dust getting on the sensor is a problem for SLRs.) The Canon Photo Shot S2 IS has an electronic viewer only. This is fine for mid to low level lighting, but fails in bright sunny out-of-doors. The camera brightnes the image to an amazing degree in low light right down to where picture taking is ineffective for this camera. But the view darkens as the scene increases in brightness. They didn't know when to quit and made the viewer too dim in bright light - an oversight that seems unfathomable for such a nice camera. Examime this feature before buying. It may have been fixed in the S3. The second problem was that its default settings cause burnout of highlights in situations that other cameras handle with ease. It took a series of test shots for me to home in on what worked for me. I found that boosting the ASA from 80 to 100, and reducing the exposure by 1/3 f-stop worked wonders in eliminating the burnout problem. I get decent pictures with these settings without sacrificing other picture elements. I recommend that you look at the Panasonic FZ and compare. According to tests made 2 years ago, the Panasonic made a little better picture, but the adjustment and available buttons on the Canon were better. Starting with the Canon S2 IS, a new fast processor was installed. Time from on to ready for snapping a picture is very fast. Some magazine reviews may complain that there is a 2 sec wait between shots, but this is a default setting to allow you to view the shot you just made so that you can decide if you need to re-shoot. This delay is adjustable. You won't need to carry a bag full of lenses with the Canon's 12X zoom. Anything more than 3X zoom requires high shutter speeds or a camera support. The Canon S2 IS has maximum aperature of f/2.7 at the wide angle end and an amazing f/3.5 at the long end of the zoom. I would have liked it if the Canon had started at a bit wider angle and sacrificed the long end for it. I have been in plenty of situations where the wide end wasn't quite enough.

rjinga, My knowledge of cameras is very limited, but maybe this will help. I use the close-up and manual focusing features more than the zoom function when photoing HB's. I manually focus on a port where I hope a hummer will land, and then wait. This was focused at about 2-3":

The 12 MP, zoom and image stabilization all sound great! Does it have a "macro" function? That's important for close-ups.

I still have my first Kodak 126 which is in good working condition. However, finding film developing is a major problem!

I'm new at this hummingbird thing and I'm in Miami so
There are not many HB's here. I'm trying so hard to get a picture of the few that visit my yard
